Sea Water Corrosion Test Program (open access)

Sea Water Corrosion Test Program

From Introduction: "The first demonstration plant sponsored by the Office of Saline Water was located in Freeport, Texas, and came 'on stream" in 1961. The incoming sea water was deaerated since both Speller (6) and Uhlig (7) recognized that dissolved oxygen was usually the controlling factor in the corrosion of iron stream condensate at temperatures even as high 400 degrees F. The water was acidified prior to daeration with H2SO4 to decompose the carbonates which subsequently would cause scale when the water was heated. After the carbonates were removed, the pH was raised to the neutral point, again to provide a less corrosive environment."

Physical interpretation of quantum theories of gravitation (open access)

Physical interpretation of quantum theories of gravitation

An alternative approach to a quantum theory of gravitation is explored in which a quantum version of the Newtonian equivalence principle is paired with special relativistic quantum field theory. Since no clear statement of the Galilei-Newton equivalence principle exists in quantum mechanics, the purpose is to take the first step in this direction by stating and sketching the proof of this nonrelativistic equivalence principle of quantum mechanics. One proceeds from operational statements to their theoretical expressions rather than postulating a formal system. Three references. (JFP)

Transport Processes in Electrochemically Controlled Ion-Exchange Desalination (open access)

Transport Processes in Electrochemically Controlled Ion-Exchange Desalination

From Summary: "The results of such experiments are summarized as follows: 1. Anion-responsive electrodes formed with Kraton, graphite, Norit, and Amberlite CG-4B demineralized well at currents up to 10 milli-amperes; regeneration was efficient up to 8 milliamperes. 2. Satisfactory anion-responsive electrodes containing Amberlite IRA-68 could only be formed when resin was first ground while in the sulfate form; it was required that it be added to the paste mixture (Kraton, Norit, and graphite) in the same form."

Columbia River Thermal Effects Study. Quarterly progress report, January--March 1969 (open access)

Columbia River Thermal Effects Study. Quarterly progress report, January--March 1969

The Columbia River Thermal Effects Study is an interagency study being carried out jointly by the Atomic Energy Commission, the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, and the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. Leadership for the study as a whole has been assigned to the Northwest Region of the FWPCA. By agreement among the participating agencies, a brief progress report on each project of the study is to be provided each quarter to the FWPCA on a standardized format. The FWPCA consolidates the submissions from all contributors and reissues the combined report to the participating agencies and to the Technical Advisory Committee. This report documents the submissions by Battelle-Northwest staff members to the progress report for the first quarter of 1969. It is expected that the AEC will transmit the submissions by the individual authors to the FWPCA, and that FWPCA will reproduce them in their consolidated report.

Compatibility studies for the waste packaging program (open access)

Compatibility studies for the waste packaging program

A program is now underway by Battelle-Northwest to develop the technology required for a waste packaging plant. Cesium chloride and strontium fluoride have been selected as the prime candidates for packaging. Cesium diuranate and strontium pyrophosphate have been selected as backup compounds for packaging in case either or both of the prime candidates should be rejected for any reason. No detailed studies of CsCl compatibility have been reported and long term data are needed. As in the case with CsCl, no detailed studies have been made on SrF{sub 2} compatibility. As a result of the lack of pertinent compatibility data, it is readily apparent that detailed studies are required on CsCl and SrF{sub 2} compatibility and at least scouting studies must be made on the compatibility of the backup packaging compounds. This report summarizes the compatibility studies that are underway at PNL using non-radioactive compounds. Capsule fabrication procedures and tests schedules are outlined.
