Episode 30: Remembering the St. John's Freedmen's Community with Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart transcript

Episode 30: Remembering the St. John's Freedmen's Community with Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart

Interview with Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) podcast. In this episode, Susan interviews Emily Bowles and Hannah Stewart about their participation in a group research project as students in UNT’s History department. The project focused on a freedmen's community that formed around St. John’s church in Pilot Point, TX. Starting with names etched into the headstones of a neglected cemetery, these students were eventually able to sketch a portrait of a vibrant community of African Americans who lived in North Texas in the early 20th century. Their group then made headlines when they uncovered evidence of racial violence that played a significant role in the community's decline. Emily and Hannah ultimately presented the results of their group's research as an OLLI at UNT class in the Fall 2019 semester.

Prioritizing riparian corridors for ecosystem restoration in urbanizing watersheds (open access)

Prioritizing riparian corridors for ecosystem restoration in urbanizing watersheds

This article explores restoration, rather than protection, being the basis for developing a watershed level strategy for improving water quality in urbanizing watersheds. This study uses a geographical information system (GIS) approach that utilizes riparian characteristics extracted from 40-meter wide corridors centered on streams and rivers. The model was applied to 90 sub-watersheds in the watershed of an important drinking water reservoir in north central Texas, USA.

West Nile Virus risk and susceptibility in central California modeling dataset

The dataset was developed to support research intended to develop a spatially explicit model that explores environmental data related to the risk of exposure to West Nile Virus (WNV), and the susceptibility to WNV disease based on demographic data of the potentially affected population. The model was developed and then tested on census tracts in an identified hot spot of WNV in central California. The dataset contains (1) U.S. Census Bureau 2010 demographic data for 1,133 census tracks in the hotspot, and (2) and average mosquito habitat risk data for each of those census tracks.
