A prototype velocity indicator was tested in the Langley impact basin to determine its accuracy. A new method for the determination of O/sub 2/ in metals is described. The sample is dropped into molten Pt in a graphite crucible. The oxide in the sample reacts with C to form CO, which is swept out by a stream of argon at atmospheric pressure. The CO is oxidized to CO/sub 2/, which is condensed in a capillary trap and measured with a capillary manometer. The apparatus is sensitive to 0.3 mu g of O/sub 2/, and routine 50-mg Pu samples give a standard deviation of 7 ppm or 0.35 mu g. Pu samples with added O/sub 2/ gave a standard deviation of 1.5 mu g or 2% of the total oxygen, with no significant bias. The apparatus is simple and rugged permitting replacement of parts without glassblowing. The speed is superior to vacuum fusion methods, most samples requiring only twelve minutes for analysis.

From introduction: "The work described in this report was carried out as part of the feasibility study (ORNL-117) of a supercritical water reactor (SCWR) for use in nuclear propulsion of aircraft. The object of this work was to study the dynamic behavior of a particular design of supercritical water reactor. Numerical results are presented in Appendix I."

Report presenting calculation studies to evaluate the influence that wing bending flexibility has on the structural response to gusts for three twin-engine transports and one four-engine bomber. The manner in which dynamic response factors for acceleration and bending moment vary with different assumed airplane operational factors is shown.

Report presenting an investigation of the observed discrepancy at supersonic speeds between theoretical and apparent experimental average flat plate friction-drag coefficients calculated from boundary layer total-pressure surveys. Some of the qualities investigated included the effects of the total-pressure probe, heat transfer through the leading-edge region, change in leading-edge radius and strength of the leading-edge wave, possible early transition to turbulent flow, and the slight streamwise pressure gradient in flat plate flow were investigated for plates with very sharp leading edges.

Report of investigations issued by the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the Hermada antimony deposit in southwestern Idaho. The investigations included trenching and drilling. The report contains maps of the area, and tables of data.

Flight tests were made of the flying qualities of an F-47D-30 airplane to determine the longitudinal stability and control and stalling characteristics. The results indicated that the airplane was unstable with stick free in any power-on condition even at the most forward center-of-gravity position tested.

From Abstract: "The mineral constituents of churn drill cuttings from a well through the Bone Valley formation and into the Hawthorn formation were determined. The weight percent of each mineral is given, as well as a description of the samples and the methods used."

Report discussing a study of the mineralogy of various Jurassic and Cretaceous claystones and siltstones of Colorado and Utah. The study was aimed at determining which minerals characterize fine sediments which include important uraniferous strata.

Report issued by the Bureau of Mines on the motor fuel sold throughout the United States between June and August of 1952. It lists trends and characteristics of the fuel sampled. The report includes graphs and tables of the data collected.

As a rule, a division of the turbulent boundary layer is admissible: a division into a part near the wall, where the flow is governed only by the wall effects, and into an outer part, where the wall roughness and the viscosity of the flow medium affects only the wall shearing stress occurring as boundary condition but does not exert any other influence on the flow. Both parts may be investigated to a large extent independently. . The theoretical considerations give a cue how to set up, by appropriate experiments and their evaluation, generally valid connections which are required for the approximate calculation of the turbulent boundary layer according to the momentum and energy theorem.

Abstract: "The NYX testing of the component disassembly equipment comprised repeated operation of both the quatrefoil disassembly machine and the foil press and shear to evaluate the suitability of these machines to perform their design function with reliability and convenience of operation. During testing, both design and operational deficiencies were found and corrected in the NYX equipment. In general, both machines operated satisfactorily after modification."

From introduction: Since 1945 the Alaskan Trace Elements Unit of the U. S. Geological. Survey has been engaged in reconnaissance for radioactive deposits in Alaska, first on behalf of the Manhattan Engineer District, later on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission. During the period January 1945 through December 1952, 42 reports in the Survey's Trace Elements Investigations series and 18 reports in the Trace Elements Memorandum series, a totaJ of 60 reports, have been completed or are in preparation Of these 60 reports 44 have been completed and transmitted to the Commission as of December 31, 1952.

From introduction: During three months of the summer of 1952, a geologic and radiometric reconnaissance examination for uraniferous materials in the peripheral parts of the Powder River structural basin in northeastern Wyoming (fig. 1) was made by the Survey on behalf of the Division of Raw Materials of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission. The purpose was to find, describe, locate, and sample deposits of uraniferous or radioactive materials other than those in the central part of the Powder River Basin in the general vicinity of the Pumpkin Buttes.

From introduction: A program of uranium investigations and geologic mapping on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Apache and Navajo Counties, northeastern Arizona (fig. 1) was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey on behalf of the Atomic Energy Commission during the field seasons of 1951 and 1952. Field work on this program has been completed and preliminary copies of the maps, which cover an area of about 700 square miles, are inclosed as part of this report. The two principal objectives of the program were to establish geologic criteria useful as guides in prospecting for uranium deposits, and to appraise the favorableness of the Shinarump conglomerate and other Triassic rocks for the occurrence of uranium deposits in order to select areas that deserve exploration for concealed deposits.
