John Caldwell has obtained leave of absence for sixty days. The reason for the leave of absence was because they would not let him retire and gave him the absence only if officers could be found to run his command. He wanted his captain to take command but the department would not allow it. Even if he had been granted retirement, it would have ended the same with a temporary command. He was able to acquiesced Dr. Col. Cunningham, a West Point graduate and a gentlemen to take the temporary command.

Letter from Hamilton K. Redway to Loriette C. Redway which discusses his next assignment during the war. He also notes that he has been on a tour down river and has had his photograph taken. He states that he will send one to Loriette, but warns her that his likeness appears "cross as usual." He sends his love to his children and his family in the letter's closing. The letter was written while Redway was at Camp Stoneman and is dated February 1, 1864.

Volunteer enlistment form for Franklin Juvell on February 29, 1864. Juvell, age 18 and born in Westmorland, New York, was mustered into the service of the United States in the 1st Regiment Volunteer Cavalry of New York.

Inventory and inspection report of unserviceable ordnance and ordnance stores issued to Capt. Hamilton K. Redway's company. The stores that were listed and inspected were: four saddles, ten sabre belts, six bridles and curb bits, and fifteen saddle blankets. With the listed items, this report also includes the amount of time these items were in use, commanding officer's remarks on the item, as well as the item's condition and disposition. The report is signed by both Capt. Hamilton K. Redway and Capt. Ira W. Claflin while they were stationed at Kelly's Creek in West Virginia. It is dated February 8, 1865.

A list of the Quartermaster's stores lost or destroyed in the public serve at Camp Piatt, West Virginia under the direction of Captain Hamilton K. Redway in the month of February 1865. One cavalry horse was shot by order of the veterinary surgeon for contagious disease.

List of returning soldiers which dates from February 1, 1865 through April 12, 1865. The names of the soldiers who have returned are included as well as the time they have returned from their furloughs. In some cases, "not returned on time" has be noted beside the name of the returning soldier.

Monthly return of clothing camp and garrison equipage received and issued at Kelley's Creek. The list includes clothing and equipage on hand and items returned and items that have been issued.

Receipt of supplies shipped to Capt. Hamilton K. Redway at his station in Kelly's Creek, West Virginia. Redway received thirty eight bales of hay, thirty six sacks of oats, and seventy seven sacks of corn for his cavalry's forage. He received this shipment at his station in Kelly's Creek.

Circular No. 1. Saddler and ? will report for duty with ? Company Cook will report for duty, unless covering for the company. it is necessary to reduce as much as possible the large number of reported on extra or daily duty.

Special orders from Lt. Col. J. S. Platner to Capt. H. K. Redway specifying the requirements for monthly and tri-monthly reports. The orders state that the reports should include details on extra and daily duty men, as well as men on detached service. It notes that in the report's remark column the number of men in Charleston, the men who are sick, and those who are on any other kind of duty.

Pass for furlough for Moses Sapoint, originally issued February 6, 1865. The pass was used repeatedly through August 1865 and includes a physical description and occupation. Includes information for stops in Baltimore, Maryland and admission to hospital because of being unfit for travel.

Special orders from Lt. A. H. Nash to Captain Hamilton K. Redway specifying that applications for furloughs should hereafter be addressed to J. M. Rife, Captain & A. A. A. General, 1st Separate Brigade,Department of West Virginia.

Letter from Capt. H. H. Boggess to Major McPhail, in Wheeling, West Virginia, informing him of Corporal Calvin Hull's furlough to Cincinnati, Ohio. The document details that Hull was part of the "F" company, 1st regiment, and was part of the N. Y. Veterans Cavalry. The corporal's furlough to Cincinnati would last 15 days and the cost of his transportation from Portland to Cincinnati was $3.09, an amount which would be docked from his pay upon his return. The letter also states that Corporal Hull would return for duty to Camp Piatt in West Virginia.

The Adjutant General's Office is notifying that John E. Rouk is accepted to receive payment starting January 1, 1865.

Letter from H. H. Burggiss to Capt. H. K. Redway that transportation was furnished from Portland OH to Cincinnati OH for Corpl. Calvin Hull at the cost of $3.09.

General orders no. 4 specifies the following calls that would be observed by the soldiers on duty in this command. The daily call schedule is detailed and additional specifications to the schedule are noted.

The private's furlough to Cincinnati would last 15 days and the cost of his transportation to Cincinnati was $1.50, an amount which would be docked from his pay upon his return. The letter also states that Private Carpenter would return for duty to Camp Piatt in West Virginia. A note on the lower left side details that the private was charged on payroll for his furlough on February 28, 1865.
