A Method of Calculating the Ultimate Strength of Continuous Beams (open access)

A Method of Calculating the Ultimate Strength of Continuous Beams

The purpose of this study was to investigate the strength of continuous beams after the elastic limit has been passed. As a result, a method of calculation, which is applicable to maximum load conditions, has been developed. The method is simpler than the methods now in use and it applies properly to conditions where the present methods fail to apply.

Comparative Tests of the Strength and Tightness of Commercial Flush Rivets of One Type and NACA Flush Rivets in Machine-Countersunk and Counterpunched Joints (open access)

Comparative Tests of the Strength and Tightness of Commercial Flush Rivets of One Type and NACA Flush Rivets in Machine-Countersunk and Counterpunched Joints

Report discusses an investigation that was conducted to compare the strength and tightness of machine-countersunk flush-riveted joints assembled with NACA flush rivets and a type of commercial flush rivet. A comparison was also generated between the strength and tightness of counterpunched flush-riveted joints assembled with the same types of rivet. NACA's flush-riveted joints tended to be stronger and tighter than the commercial joints.

Knock-limited performance of several internal coolants (open access)

Knock-limited performance of several internal coolants

The effect of internal cooling on the knock-limited performance of an-f-28 fuel was investigated in a CFR engine, and the following internal coolants were used: (1) water, (2), methyl alcohol-water mixture, (3) ammonia-methyl alcohol-water mixture, (4) monomethylamine-water mixture, (5) dimethylamine-water mixture, and (6) trimethylamine-water mixture. Tests were run at inlet-air temperatures of 150 degrees and 250 degrees F. to indicate the temperature sensitivity of the internal-coolant solutions.

The Determination of Tuballoy in the Presence of Thorium in Peroxide Effluents and Cakes

Abstract: "A polarographic method for the determination of tuballoy in thorium peroxide cakes in all sold medium was found to give satisfactory results. Fluorescent analyses on effluents containing thorium gave good results if the thorium content was kept below 1 mg/liter."

High Frequency Induction Heating (open access)

High Frequency Induction Heating

Abstract: Equations are given to calculate at least approximately the heating in solid and hollow cylinders, slabs and spheres. Short and long cylinders are treated as well as short and long solenoids. The complicated mathematics used to derive the equations given will be omitted as they may be found in the original references. Heating with a spark gap converter is covered. Equations are given which together with some experimental data should enable the reader to predict the efficiency, heating, or temperature to be expected as the charge or coil is changed. Units and conversion factors are mentioned briefly.

Impregnation of Graphite With Uranium Compounds for Use as Fuel Rod Materials (open access)

Impregnation of Graphite With Uranium Compounds for Use as Fuel Rod Materials

A process hns been developed for impregnating graphite with U/sub 3/O/ sub 8/ in connection with the proposed use of such material for fuel rod elements in the Daniels' High Temperature Pile. The process as developed consists of five steps: Fabrication of the graphite in the desired shape; Pretreatment of the graphite by boiling in water and then firing in helium at 800 deg C; Impregnating the graphite by first evacuating the pretreated material and then admitting an aqueous uranyl nitrate solution whose concentration is etermined by the final uranium content desired in the raphite; Drying the impregnated graphite slowly under quilibrium conditions; and Conversion of the uranyl itrate to U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ by firing in helium at 800 deg C. By this process fuel rod elements have been made which contain as much as 19% U/sub 3/O/sub 8/ distributed uniformly throughout the graphite. The considerations leading to the choice of this process are discussed in this report, together with the alternate procedures which were investigated. (auth)

On Closed Shells in Nuclei (open access)

On Closed Shells in Nuclei

It has been suggested in the past that special numbers of neutrons or protons in the nucleus form a particularly stable configuration.{sup1} The complete evidence for this has never been summarized, nor is it generally recognized how convincing this evidence is. That 20 neutrons or protons (Ca{sup40}) form a closed shell is predicted by the Hartree model. A number of calculations support this fact.{sup2} These considerations will not be repeated here. In this paper, the experimental facts indicating a particular stability of shells of 50 and 82 protons and of 50, 82, and 126 neutrons will be listed.
