Polynomial Curve and Surface Fitting (open access)

Polynomial Curve and Surface Fitting

The main problems of numerical analysis involve performing analytical operations, such as integration, differentiation, finding zeroes, interpolation, and so forth, of a function when all the data available are some samples of the function. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the following problem: given a set of data points (x[sub i], y[sub i]) which are samples of some function, determine an approximating function. Further, extend the problem to that of determining an approximating function for a surface given some samples (x[sub i], y[sub j], z[sub ij]) of the surface.

The Draw-A-Person Technique as a Measure of Sexual Conflict (open access)

The Draw-A-Person Technique as a Measure of Sexual Conflict

Since much of the existing research which points to the low validity of the Draw-a-Person technique has used differentiation of diagnostic categories as a criterion, this study will be restricted to a consideration of the Draw-a-Person technique as a means for discriminating between a group of individuals who manifest conflicts in the area of sexual adjustment and a control group which does not show these conflicts in any appreciable amount.

Equal Representation and State Legislative Apportionment: a Study of the Political Impact of the Legislative Reapportionment Decisions (open access)

Equal Representation and State Legislative Apportionment: a Study of the Political Impact of the Legislative Reapportionment Decisions

This study is concerned with the political impact of the Supreme Court's decisions concerning state legislative apportionment. First, an attempt is made to describe the political environment in which they were made, with special reference to the existing bases of representation in the states and the political reaction to the decisions. Secondly, the study traces the major issues relating to judicial enforcement of the apportionment standards enunciated by the Supreme Court and the modification and development of those standards that followed the initial decisions. Finally, the extent to which reapportionment has been successfully enforced by the courts may suggest some tentative conclusions about the viability and utility of the equal population doctrine as a constitutional standard, as well as some of the possible political consequences of enforcement of that standard.

The Concept of the Ennobling Power of Love in Shakespeare's Love Tragedies

This study proposes to demonstrate that the Platonic doctrine of the ennobling power of love is of paramount importance in a number of Shakespeare's plays. This study has been limited to the three love tragedies because in them the ennobling power of love is a major theme, affecting both the characters and the plot structure. The plays to be studied are Romeo and Juliet, Troilus and Cressida, and Antony and Cleopatra.

Galvanomagnetic Determination of Energy Bands in Arsenic (open access)

Galvanomagnetic Determination of Energy Bands in Arsenic

A study of the transport properties of a substance requires the determination of a set of transport coefficients by experiment. From these coefficients, the elements of the electrical conductivity tensor, thermoelectric tensor, et cetera can be determined. In this experiment, measurements and analyses of galvanomagnetic effects in a single crystal of arsenic were performed. The measurements were made at liquid-helium temperatures in magnetic fields ranging to 25 kilogauss. The gross isothermal, electrical conductivities have been analyzed to determine various parameters characterizing the energy bands in arsenic.

Maxwell Anderson : Preparation, Methods, and Views in Musical Comedy (open access)

Maxwell Anderson : Preparation, Methods, and Views in Musical Comedy

Even before he became a playwright, Maxwell Anderson developed a belief in the right of the individual to determine his own fate, and a hatred for anything that hampered that right. He never faltered in that belief. Thus, most of his plays have themes concerned with the evils of the abuse of governmental power and the social injustice that is the result of such abuse. It is the purpose of this thesis to study those beliefs as they were developed throughout severl preceding plays and as they were finally expressed in both Anderson's musicals, Knickerbocker Holiday (1938) and Lost in the Stars (1949).
