Homogenization of arc-melted uranium-6 weight percent niobium alloy ingots

Microsegregation and macrosegregation in uranium-6 niobium arc-melted ingots were characterized by electron microprobe analysis. Homogenization studies determined that microsegregation can be eliminated by heat treating the alloy for six hours at 1100/sup 0/C. Extensive homogenization did not eliminate macrosegregation (banding) from the as-cast alloy, but a mathematical model describing banding and coring indicated that banding could possibly be eliminated by working prior to homogenization.

Pathfinder Atomic Power Plant Analog Simulator.

The steady-state and dynamlc characterlstics of the Pathfinder systems were simulated on a dual-console Pace Analog Computer. The derivation of the system equations, the assumptions involved, their numerical evaluation, and their conversion to analog circuitry are described. The Pathfinder system is unique because of the internal nuclear superheater, and controlled, forced recirculation. In simulating this system the following major assumptions were maden the reactor is a boiling-water type; moderated and cooled with saturated, light water; pressurized between 400 and 800 psiai and has a neutron flux distribution that is spatially invariant. All the importanit non-linearities are retained, thus permitting accurate solutions of large system disturbances. The neutron kinetics equations, with their six groups of delayed neutrons, are simulated with power feedbacks through reactor pressure, steam flow, core inlet subcooling, and fuel- element temperature. Particular attention ls devoted to the accurate simulation of fuel-element heat transfer; the reactor pressure-control system, which operates the turbine inlet valves; and the effect of core inlet subcooling, sinee these were found to have pronounced effects on reactor performance. Test and Evaluation of Alco/BLH Prototype Sodium-Heated Steam Generator: Final Report

A 30-Mwt prototype sodium-to-sodium intermediate heat exchanger and a 30-Mwt prototype sodium-heated steam generator were tested in combined operation in its Sodium Components Test Installation. This report contains the results of test and evaluation of the steam generator. During plant performance tests, performance degradation was observed, which resulted in the initiation of a diagnostic test series. This test series revealed that under certain operating conditions, the thermohydraulic characteristic of the steam generator changed either suddenly or gradually, resulting in overall performance degradation. A structural failure, requiring retirement of the unit, occurred before the diagnostic test series and analytical support effort were completed. This report describes the thermohydraulic and structural performance, including the structural failures, and related evaluation analyses of the Alco/BLH prototype steam generator performed prior to termination of the test and evaluation program. In addition, the report presents a post-test examination plan to obtain data that could possibly explain the cause of performance anomalies and structural failures experienced during testing.

Apparatus for simultaneously measuring electrical conductivity and oxygen fugacity

Electrical conductivity studies of silicates are useful in determining temperature vs depth in the earth. Realistic laboratory measurements of conduction mechanisms require that exact determinations of oxygen fugacity (fo{sub 2}) be made in the experimental environment. An apparatus is described that monitors system fo{sub 2} with a calcia-doped zirconia-oxygen cell while measuring electrical conductivity of iron-bearing silicates at high temperature (greater than 1000 K). The fo{sub 2} calculated thermodynamically from CO/CO{sub 2} mixing ratios agreed well with measurements made with the zirconia cell at 1473 K, except for fo{sub 2} greater than 10{sup -4} Pa, where, on a log{sub 10} scale, mixing-ratio errors were as large as +- 0.2. These errors are attributed to oxygen contamination in the CO{sub 2} and to mobile carbon deposits that formed in the apparatus.

Helium generation in fusion reactor materials. Technical progress report, April--September 1977

The near-term objectives of this program are to measure the spectrum-integrated helium generation rates and cross sections of a number of pure elements and alloys in several high-intensity neutron sources, and to develop and demonstrate neutron dosimetry procedures using some of these materials. To this end, four neutron irradiation experiments have now been run: one using accelerator-produced d-Be neutrons, two using the accelerator-produced d-T reaction, and one in the neutron field of a mixed-spectrum fission reactor. All of these irradiations have incorporated a large number of helium-generation materials.

Process development for automated solar cell and module production. Task 4: automated array assembly. Quarterly report No. 5

Construction of an automated solar cell layup and interconnect system is now complete. This system incorporates a Unimate 2000 B industrial robot with an end effector consisting of a vacuum pick up and induction heating coil. The robot interfaces with a smart cell preparation station which correctly orients the cell, applies solder paste and forms and positions the correct lengths of interconnect lead. The system is controlled and monitored by a TRS-80 micro computer. The first operational tests of the fully integrated station have been run. These tests proved the soundness of the basic design concept but also pointed to areas in which modifications are necessary. These modifications are nearly complete and the improved parts are being integrated. Development of the controlling computer program is progressing to both reflect these changes and reduce operating time.

The following conclusions were drawn from the study: (1) The US will continue to require new sources of energy fuels and substitutes for petrochemical feedstocks into the foreseeable future. Most of this requirement will be met using coal. However, the cost of mining, transporting, cleaning, and preparing coal, disposing of ash or slag and scrubbing stack gases continues to rise; particularly, in the Eastern US where the need is greatest. UCG avoids these pitfalls and, as such, should be considered a viable alternative to the mining of deeper coals. (2) Of the two possible product gases LBG and MBG, MBG is the most versatile. (3) The most logical use for UCG product in the Eastern US is to generate power on-site using a combined-cycle or co-generation system. Either low or medium Btu gas (LBG or MBG) can be used. (4) UCG should be an option whenever surface gasification is considered; particularly, in areas where deeper, higher sulfur coal is located. (5) There are environmental and social benefits to use of UCG over surface gasification in the Eastern US. (6) A site could be chosen almost anywhere in the Illinois and Ohio area where amenable UCG coal has been determined due …
