NYIT Energy Advisory Service initial evaluation report (open access)

NYIT Energy Advisory Service initial evaluation report

The Center for Energy Policy and Research of the New York Institute of Technology has organized an ENERGY ADVISORY SERVICE for information dissemination on energy conservation techniques to various target audiences in the New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut area. The Service, in operation since June 1, 1976 established four channels of communication to disseminate energy conservation information and technical assistance: The NYIT Energy Hot Line, the NYIT/ERDA (MRC-TV) Energy Management Seminar program, the Energy Information Center, and the Referral Service. The purposes of this report are two-fold: (1) to provide expanded and up-dated information on operating experiences associated with the NYIT Energy Hot Line and the NYIT/ERDA (MRC-TV) Energy Management Seminar Program, and (2) to provide recently analyzed data emerging from a study designed to investigate the two channels for their absolute and comparative effectiveness in energy technology transfer. Specifically research was designed to cast light on the following questions: (a) in terms of demographics and prior energy attitudes, what kinds of people tend to use the hot line or be drawn to the television seminar; (b) how did channel users feel about the channel after experiencing it; (c) how did channel users perform on energy-transfer effectiveness measures of …

Low-temperature thermal energy storage quarterly progress report for period July--September 1976. [Phase-change materials] (open access)

Low-temperature thermal energy storage quarterly progress report for period July--September 1976. [Phase-change materials]

The document is the second in a series of quarterly progress reports covering activities funded at ORNL by the ERDA Division of Energy Storage Systems to develop low-temperature thermal energy storage (TES) technology. These systems will be based on either sensible or latent heat storage at temperatures up to approximately 250/sup 0/C. At ORNL, research efforts were continued to (a) develop a time-dependent analytical model that will describe a TES system charged with a phase-change material, (b) measure thermophysical properties and melt-freeze cyclic behavior of interesting PCM's and (c) determine crystal lattice structures of hydrated salts and their nucleators. A report on TES subsystems for application to solar energy sources was completed and is being reviewed. In the area of program management, subcontracts were signed with Clemson University, Dow Chemical Company, Suntek Research Associates, and The Franklin Institute. Detailed reviews were completed for ten unsolicited proposals related to TES. Industries, research institutions, universities, and other national laboratory participation in the TES program, for which ORNL has management responsibilities, are listed.

Nuclear processes involved in electronuclear breeding (open access)

Nuclear processes involved in electronuclear breeding

The nuclear processes considered in a recent LLL assessment of electronuclear breeding of fissile material are described. The nuclear cross sections and neutron yields measured in the MTA program (1949-1954), and the nuclear cascade calculations carried out then and in more recent times are briefly described. The probable advantage of deuterons over protons as particles to be accelerated is mentioned, and the need for a series of experiments to determine the choice of particle, optimum accelerator parameters and target system design is stressed.

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Seventeenth Quarterly Progress Report (open access)

Baseline Gas Turbine Development Program. Seventeenth Quarterly Progress Report

Progress is reported for a program whose goals are to demonstrate an experimental upgraded gas turbine powered automobile which meets the 1978 Federal Emissions Standards, has significantly improved fuel economy, and is competitive in performance, reliability, and potential manufacturing cost with the conventional piston engine powered, compact-size American automobile. Initial running of the upgraded engine took place on July 13, 1976. The engine has proved to be mechanically sound, but has also been seriously deficient in power. Principal program effort has therefore been in the area of diagnostic testing and corrective development. To date, three upgraded engines have been assembled and run in the test cell. Engine 2 was installed in an upgraded vehicle and became operational on January 25, 1977. Special diagnostic instrumentation was installed on Engine 3 to evaluate the compressor, turbine, and hot engine leakage. It was determined that the power deficiency was principally due to problems in the compressor and first stage turbine areas and during this quarter several corrective changes have been initiated. Parts for a fourth engine being built for NASA Lewis have been shipped to NASA for installation of special instrumentation.
