Prospects for Electron Imaging with Ultrafast Time Resolution (open access)

Prospects for Electron Imaging with Ultrafast Time Resolution

Many pivotal aspects of material science, biomechanics, and chemistry would benefit from nanometer imaging with ultrafast time resolution. Here we demonstrate the feasibility of short-pulse electron imaging with t10 nanometer/10 picosecond spatio-temporal resolution, sufficient to characterize phenomena that propagate at the speed of sound in materials (1-10 kilometer/second) without smearing. We outline resolution-degrading effects that occur at high current density followed by strategies to mitigate these effects. Finally, we present a model electron imaging system that achieves 10 nanometer/10 picosecond spatio-temporal resolution.

The Super Flavor Factory (open access)

The Super Flavor Factory

The main physics goals of a high luminosity e{sup +}e{sup -} flavor factory are discussed, including the possibilities to perform detailed studies of the CKM mechanism of quark mixing, and constrain virtual Higgs and Non-Standard Model particle contributions to the dynamics of rare B{sub u,d,s} decays. The large samples of D mesons and {tau} leptons produced at a flavor factory will result in improved sensitivities on D mixing and lepton flavor violation searches, respectively. One can also test fundamental concepts such as lepton universality to much greater precision than existing constraints and improve the precision on tests of CPT from B meson decays. Recent developments in accelerator physics have demonstrated the feasibility to build an accelerator that can achieve luminosities of {Omicron}(10{sup 36} cm{sup -2} s{sup -1}).

Phosphate Bariers for Immobilization of Uranium Plumes (open access)

Phosphate Bariers for Immobilization of Uranium Plumes

Uranium contamination of the subsurface has remained a persistent problem plaguing remedial design at sites across the U.S. that were involved with production, handling, storage, milling, and reprocessing of uranium for both civilian and defense related purposes. Remediation efforts to date have relied upon excavation, pump-and-treat, or passive remediation barriers (PRB's) to remove or attenuate uranium mobility.

Campaign Finance: An Overview (open access)

Campaign Finance: An Overview

Concerns over financing federal elections have become a seemingly perennial aspect of our political system, long centered on the enduring issues of high campaign costs and reliance on interest groups for needed campaign funds. Rising election costs had long fostered a sense in some quarters that spending was out of control, with too much time spent raising funds and elections "bought and sold." This report contains information on the evolution of the current system, campaign finance practices and related issues, policy options to address campaign finance issues, legislative action in the 109th and 110th Congresses, and additional information and figures.

B133 Facility Screening Report (SCR) (open access)

B133 Facility Screening Report (SCR)

B133 is located in the southwest quadrant inside the 1 square mile site of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The property is about 250 meters from the nearest boundary along Vasco Road. Building 133 is a 1 story steel framed building constructed in 1994 with stainless steel sidings. The facility covers 5,631 gross square feet of space. The building is used to house equipment to heat and cool buildings 132N and 132S. A 1380 volts electrical substation is located outside on the northeast corner, along with 2 diesel generators and a 1000 gallons diesel fuel tank. An evaporative cooling tower is located to the south of B133 to dissipate heat from the chillers located in B133. The inside of the facility is divided into three main rooms housing the cooling system units, the boilers, and the electrical distribution panels. The facility has an automatic sprinkler system installed through out and a Freon alarm located in room 1000. Building 133 is used to supply electrical power, chilled water, and hot water to Bldgs 132 N & S. Primary activities include servicing and maintaining chillers, boilers, and electrical distribution equipment.

Mointoring Thickness Deviations in Planar Multi-Layered Elastic Structures Using Impedance Signatures (open access)

Mointoring Thickness Deviations in Planar Multi-Layered Elastic Structures Using Impedance Signatures

In this letter, a low frequency ultrasonic resonance technique that operates in the (20 - 80 kHz) regime is presented that demonstrates detection of thickness changes on the order of +/- 10{micro}m. This measurement capability is a result of the direct correlation between the electrical impedance of an electro-acoustic transducer and the mechanical loading it experiences when placed in contact with a layered elastic structure. The relative frequency shifts of the resonances peaks can be estimated through a simple one-dimensional transmission model. Separate experimental measurements confirm this technique to be sensitive to subtle changes in the underlying layered elastic structure.
