From abstract: The area comprising the first flood plain downstream from the headwaters of Knob Creek was one of three monazite placer deposits near Shelby, N. C., recommended by the Geological Survey for investigation by the Bureau of Mines as a joint effort by the above two agencies. Past production of monazite from the headwaters of this stream and its drainage of an area of known source rocks were factors influencing this selection. Drilling of the deposit was started on November 26, 1951, and completed December 29, 1951. Twenty-two churn-drill holes were completed to bed-rock on 112 acres of this flood plain for a total depth of 433 feet of vertical drilling.

Introduction: The investigation of monazite deposits in the southeastern states by the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey on behalf on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission was prompted by the history of past production and the many communications reporting the occurrence of monazite in this area.

From abstract: This report presents preliminary results of stream sediment and ground water reconnaissance in the Charlotte National Topographic Map Series (NTMS) 1° x 2° quadrangle. Stream sediment samples were collected from small streams at 1254 sites for a nominal density of one site per 13 square kilometers (five square miles) in rural areas. Ground water samples were collected at 759 sites for nominal density of one site per 25 square kilometers (ten square miles).

From summary: A preliminary geologic investigation was conducted to determine if the Triassic sedimentary rocks of the Sanford basin and Colon cross structure in North Carolina are favorable hosts for uranium deposits. Rocks of the adjacent Carolina slate belt were also examined as a potential source of uranium

"This report describes studies and analyses made to determine the load-carrying capacities of the pavements at Simmons Army Airfield with respect to various aircraft landing gear assemblies and pavement life categories. The report includes data obtained from design specifications, in-place and laboratory tests performed during construction of the pavements, and in-place and laboratory tests performed for evaluation purposes" (p. 1).
