A letter written to Major T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Neill H. Banister, Lieut. Col., Infantry, Asst. to the Adjutant General, State of Texas, Austin, dated January 2, 1942. Banister acknowledges the letter from Carswell to General Page [Brigadier General J. Watt Page] was received but the declaration of war on December 7 gave no time to give Carswell's suggestion proper consideration.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from J. D. Sandefer, Jr., Chairman, Board of Trustees, Hardin-Simmons University dated January 21, 1942. Sandefer announces the annual meeting of the Hardin-Simmons University Board of Trustees which will include the election of officers for the ensuing year.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from J. Ralph Lee, Colorado City, Texas, dated January 4, 1942. Lee inquires of Carswell whether or not Bob Wagstaff is a good speaker and explains that he is thinking of asking him to speak to their Lions Club. He notes his regret that it was necessary for Carswell to resign his place in the Defense Guard.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from L. E. Newton, Rotan, Texas, Mayor, dated January 29, 1942. Newton advises of gossip regarding remarks purportedly made by Carswell in reference to Newton and the Defense Guard at Rotan. He states, "I never was much of hand to pay attention to 'rumors'" and requests that Carswell write to assure him no such statement was made.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from W. R. White, President, Hardin-Simmons University dated January 9, 1942. White extends felicitations to Carswell and his family and expresses his appreciation and that of the University for his part in the "Greater Hardin-Simmons University".

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Jeff Davis, Executive Secretary, United Texas Drys, dated January 27, 1942. Advisement from Davis regarding the counties that are to be included in Carswell's district, qualifying probable success due to P. D. O'Brien being located in Big Spring but requesting Carswell to revise the list and submit suggestions.

A handwritten essay titled "What is Americanism?" written by Mrs. Frank Burney, President, Baptist Woman's Missionary Union, Atlanta, Georgia. The envelope into which the letter was placed is also included in the record. The reverse side of envelope includes handwritten address for Mrs. Frank Burney, Waynesboro, Ga.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, American Legion, Abilene, Texas, from Robbins Wolcott Barstow, President, The Hartford Seminary Foundation, Hartford, Connecticut, dated January 8, 1942. Barstow expresses his views on Americanism advising of the enclosed clipping regarding remarks he made to a group of newly naturalized citizens. The article in the clipping is titled "New Citizens: Devotion to Ideal, ' by Robbins W. Barstow, President Harford Seminary Foundation.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas, from Andrew Dilworth, Department Commander, San Antonio, Texas, dated January 17, 1942. Dilworth acknowledges his receipt of letter and membership progress report from Carswell, comments on the good numbers regarding the membership growth of the Legion then compliments Carswell and the other Legionnaires of that Division as doing a "swell" job.

A letter written to Mr. Carswell from Mabel Davidson, Lynchburg, Virginia, dated January 22, 1942. Davidson advises of her opinion regarding the real reason for Peggy Anne's discouragement. She describes a very, undesirable roommate and offers options for the situation to be remedied.
