Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming (open access)

Airborne Radioactivity Survey of the Red Desert Region, Sweetwater County, Wyoming

From abstract: An airborne radioactivity survey of a selected area in the Red Desert, Sweetwater County, Wyoming, containing outcrops of radioactive lignites and shales of known surface extent and uranium content, was flown on flight lines at three levels, respectively 250, 500, and 1,000 feet above the ground and spaced at one-quarter mile intervals. Measurements from three identical dual-channel radiation detectors were simultaneously recorded to obtain data at various distances from natural radioactive sources of known configuration. The radiation intensity measurements were fully corrected for all extraneous effects and were compiled as profiles of radiation intensity, as an isoradioactivity contour map, and as curves showing the relationship between radiation intensity and distance from the source.

Airborne Radiometric Survey of the East Flank of the Big Horn Mountains, Wyoming and Montana (open access)

Airborne Radiometric Survey of the East Flank of the Big Horn Mountains, Wyoming and Montana

Abstract: An airborne radiometric survey of parts of the east flank of the Big Horn Mountains was begun on June 23, and completed on August 27, 1952. An area of approximately 250 square miles was covered, and only two anomalies were found in the entire area. Flight lines were arranged in accordance with the geology of the area, particular attention being given to formations the stratigraphic equivalents of which are known to be uranium bearing in other areas. Two additional zones of radioactivity were found by ground investigation, but assays from both the ground and the airborne discoveries showed no economic uranium deposits.

The Alfalfa Weevil and Methods of Controlling It (open access)

The Alfalfa Weevil and Methods of Controlling It

"The alfalfa weevil destroys a great deal of alfalfa in northern Utah and southern Idaho. It also inhabits southwestern Wyoming and is spreading slowly to new territory in all directions. It may in time infest most of the United States. The adult, a small brown snout-beetle, and the larva, a green, worm-like creature, usually escape notice during the first two or three years that they are present in a locality, but as soon as they become numerous enough to do harm they are readily found, and their effect upon the appearance of the fields is conspicuous. Vigorous treatment is then necessary to prevent partial or total destruction of the first and second crops. The purpose of this bulletin is to show how serious the attack is to the farmer, how much territory it embraces and how it spreads, and to describe the insect, its work, and the methods which are effective in dealing with it." -- title page

Analyses of Coals in the United States with Descriptions of Mine and Field Samples Collected between July 1, 1904 and June 30, 1910 Part 2. Descriptions of Samples

From Introduction: "This volume contains the descriptions of the samples whose analyses are published in the preceding volume, Part I of this bulletin. The descriptions have been compiled from the notebooks of the persons who collected the samples, have been condensed from accounts given in published reports of the United States Geological Survey, or have furnished by the collection themselves. Inasmuch as the descriptions represent the work of many persons during a period of six years, and inasmuch as they were recorded under widely differing conditions, they necessarily vary in fullness detail."

An Analysis of Salinity in Streams of the Green River Basin (open access)

An Analysis of Salinity in Streams of the Green River Basin

Abstract: Dissolved-solids concentrations and loads can be estimated from streamflow records using a regression model derived from chemical analyses of monthly samples. The model takes seasonal effects into account by the inclusion of simple-harmonic time functions. Monthly mean dissolved-solids loads simulated for a 6-year period at U.S. Geological Survey water-quality stations in the Green River Basin of Wyoming agree closely with corresponding loads estimated from daily specific-conductance records. In a demonstration of uses of the model, an average gain of 114,000 tons of dissolved solids per year was estimated for 6-year period in a 70-mile reach of the Green River from Fontemelle Reservoir to the town of Green River, including the lower 30-mile reach of the Big Sandy River.

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming (open access)

Analysis of Stream Quality in the Yampa River Basin, Colorado and Wyoming

From introduction: This report relates to the first of the above objectives by describing stream quality in the Yampa River basin through 1976, with particular emphasis on conditions from August 1975 through September 1976. The content of this report is, at times, relatively technical. This is intentional. The report is aimed not at planners and decision makers but rather at those persons assigned the task of having to design, implement, and interpret a river basin assessment. The techniques and procedures used to determine ambient stream quality in the Yampa River basin have been presented in detail so that their applicability to other river basins can be determined. For the planner and decision maker, the results presented in this report are summarized in less technical terms in phase-l (Steele and others, 1979) and phase-ll summary reports.
