Uranophane at Silver Cliff Mine, Lusk, Wyoming

Abstract: The uranium deposit at the Silver Cliff mine near Lusk, Wyo., consists primarily of uranophane which occurs as fracture fillings and small replacement pockets in faulted and fractured calcareous sandstone of Cambrian(?) age. The country rock in the vicinity of the mine is schist of pre-Cambrian age intruded by pegmatite dikes and is unconformably overlain by almost horizontal sandstone of Cambrian(?) age. The mine is on the southern end of the Lusk Dome, a local structure probably related to the Hartville uplift. In the immediate vicinity of the mine, the dome is cut by the Silver Cliff fault, a north-trending high-angle reverse fault about 1,200 feet in length with a stratigraphic throw of 70 feet. Uranophane, metatorbernite, pitchblende, calcite, native silver, native copper, chalcocite, azurite, malachite, chrysocolla, and cuprite have been deposited in fractured sandstone. The fault was probably mineralized throughout its length, but because of erosion, the mineralized zone is discontinuous. The principal ore body is about 800 feet long. The width and depth of the mineralized zone are not accurately known but are at least 20 feet and 60 feet respectively. From introduction: This report presents an evaluation of the mineral endowment (identified resources and mineral resource potential) of the study area and is the product of several separate studies by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Identified resources are classified according to a modification of the system described by McKelvey (1972) and the USBM and USGS (1980), which is shown in the Appendix. Identified resources are studied by the USBM. Mineral resource potential is the likelihood of occurrence of undiscovered metals and nonmetals, industrial rocks and minerals, and of undiscovered energy sources (coal, oil, gas, oil shale, tar, and geothermal sources). It is classified according to the system of Goudarzi (1984) and is shown in the Appendix. Undiscovered resources are studied by the USGS.

Mineral Resources of the Bobcat Draw Badlands Wilderness Study Area, Big Horn and Washakie Counties, Wyoming

Abstract: The Bobcat Draw (WY-010-126) Wilderness Study Area includes about 17,150 acres and is located about 45 mi (miles) by road west of Worland in the Bighorn basin. The arid landscape comprises treeless uplands drained by intermittent streams. No identified resources are in the Bobcat Draw Wilderness Study Area. Most of the area is currently under lease for oil and gas. The study area has a high potential for resources of oil and gas and a high potential for subeconomic resources of deeply buried coal. The potential for a deep-seated geothermal energy resource is moderate. The resource potential for oil shale and metals, including uranium, is low.

A total-intensity anomaly aeromagnetic map with 3 mile spaced east-west flight-lines is also presented. Also included is an analysis of these maps and data, focusing on gravity and aeromagnetic studies.

Proterozoic Geology of the Granite Village Area, Albany and Laramie Counties, Wyoming, Compared with that of the Sierra Madre and Medicine Bow Mountains of Southeastern Wyoming

Abstract: "Precambrian metavolcanic rocks north and south of the village of Granite, Wyoming, belong to a sequence of isolated metavolcanic and metasedimentary masses in the Sherman Granite of the southern Laramie Mountains. Similar rocks lie to the west, in the Precambrian uplifts of the southern Medicine Bow Mountains and Sierra Madre. A major fault system, the Cheyenne belt, splits these two ranges into northern and southern domains, and may constitute a suture along which Early Proterozoic islands arcs collided with an Early Proterozoic passive margin. Projection of the Cheyenne belt into the Laramie Mountains suggests that the study area, which is 65 kilometers south of the proposed suture, comprises a distinct volcanic arc with a unique chemistry or age. However, chemistry of the volcanic rocks of the study area as determined as so far does not differ significantly from those of the Medicine Bow Mountains and Sierra Madre."
