Low-Flow Characteristics of Wisconsin Streams at Sewage-Treatment Plants

Abstract: Low-flow characteristics of Wisconsin streams at 415 sewage-treatment plants are presented in this report. The low-flow characteristics presented are the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 2 years and the annual minimum 7-day mean flow that occurs on the average of once in 10 years. The low-flow characteristics at most sewage-treatment plants were determined by correlating baseflow measurements at the sewage-treatment plants to the concurrent daily mean flow at continuous-record gaging stations in the area. The accuracy determined by the standard error of estimate for the 10-year low flow ranged from 18 percent at continuous-record gaging stations to 70 percent when only three base-flow measurements were available. The standard error of 70 percent is larger than anticipated when the project was initiated. This was the result of extremely poor base-flow conditions during the 2-year data collection period. Additional base-flow conditions will be obtained during subsequent years which will improve the standard error somewhere between 29 and 45 percent.

Outputs include outflow from the lake into Murphy Creek (70 percent), evotranspiration from the lake and wetland (26 percent), and ground-water outflow (4 percent).

Recycling Ground Water in Waushara County, Wisconsin: Resource Management for Cold-Water Fish Hatcheries

Recycling water within the local ground-water system is an effective means to increase quantity and control water temperature of the water supply and to control or avoid environmental pollution. A fish-rearing facility, operated for 15 months, returned water to the local ground-water system through an infiltration pond and recycled 83 percent of its water supply. For each 100 gallons pumped the net stress on the aquifer was equivalent to withdrawing 17 gallons. Despite recycling, nutrient content and temperature of the water supply were acceptable throughout the study period. The rearing-facility nutrient output ranged from 1 to 2 pounds of nitrate-nitrogen per day, but nitrate-nitrogen levels in the water supply remained below 4 mg/1. The water temperature ranged from 7°C to 14°C. Mathematical relations developed show that acceptable nitrate-nitrogen levels and water temperatures nearly optimum for salmonid rearing could be maintained during full-scale hatchery operation.

In 1968, Federal research funds were obtained to provide for more detailed study of water quality and to extend the scope of the study to include aquatic biota.

Effects of a Floodwater-Retarding Structure on the Hydrology and Ecology of Trout Creek in Southwestern Wisconsin

Abstract: The primary effect of a floodwater-retarding structure (FRS) on the flow of Trout Creek, Wisconsin, is attenuation of flood peaks. Reduction of flood peaks ranged from 58 to 91 percent during the study period, 1975 to 1979. An inverse relationship exists between sediment concentration and outflow from the FRS during floods. Most sediment stored in the flood pool during floods is released from the reservoir during subsequent reduced discharge. Sediment-trapping efficiency of the FRS was 7 percent during the 4-year study. The bankfull capacity of the channel was reduced from 154 cubic feet per second upstream from the FRS to 65 cubic feet per second downstream. Mean bankfull depth downstream from the FRS has adjusted to a value 45 percent less than upstream from the structure due to the sedimentation of materials transported from the FRS during reduced flows. The FRS was not found to have any significant adverse effect on the arthropod fauna or trout reproduction in Trout Creek from 1975 to 1979. During 1960-1979, winter floods seem to have had the greatest adverse effect on the survival of brown trout eggs and sac fry.
