Sweet Clover on Corn Belt Farms (open access)

Sweet Clover on Corn Belt Farms

"Sweet clover is now grown successfully on many farms in the corn belt, both in rotation and as a catch crop to be plowed under. It has proved excellent for hay and pasture, and is unequaled by any other legume for soil improvement. Sweet clover may be used to good advantage for silage, and on some farms, with proper management, it is a profitable seed crop. Mixed with bluegrass, it makes a pasture of nearly double the carrying capacity of bluegrass alone. The object of this bulletin is to present details of management and of the more important farm practices followed on some of the successful corn-belt farms on which sweet clover is grown as one of the principal crops of the rotation. Cropping systems are outlined for farms of different types, and special attention is called to the three essentials of success in growing the crop -- lime, inoculation, and scarified seed." -- p. 2

Pre-Cambrian Rocks of the Lake Superior Region: A Review of Newly Discovered Geologic Features, with a Revised Geologic Map (open access)

Pre-Cambrian Rocks of the Lake Superior Region: A Review of Newly Discovered Geologic Features, with a Revised Geologic Map

From abstract: Detailed knowledge of the geology of the pre-Cambrian rocks of the Lake Superior region has been greatly augmented since the publication of Monograph 52 by the United States Geological Survey in 1911. The authors have attempted in the present report to assemble as much of this new information as possible, and to give the reader a birdseye view of the geology as seen in the light of all studies made there up to the present time. Detailed descriptions are not presented, and the emphasis is placed upon the major problems of correlation. A revised map of the region, with cross sections, accompanies the report, bringing up to date a knowledge of the areal geology of the region, which otherwise could be gained only by consulting some 150 maps contained in almost as many separate local reports, many of which are unpublished.

Hydrogeochemical and Stream Sediment Reconnaissance Basic Data for Iron Mountain NTMS Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin

From abstract: Results of a reconnaissance geochemical survey of the Iron Mountain Quadrangle, Michigan; Wisconsin are reported. Field and laboratory data are presented for 479 groundwater samples, 369 stream sediment samples, and 389 stream water samples. Statistical and areal distributions of uranium and other possible uranium-related variables are displayed. A generalized geologic map of the survey area is provided, and pertinent geologic factors which may be of significance in evaluating the potential for uranium mineralization are briefly discussed.
