Raleigh Court, Jamestown Exposition, 1907

"Official souvenir" color postcard depicting the Raleigh Court at the Jamestown Exposition in 1907. There is a lake in the foreground with many boats on it, walkways lined with lamp posts along the water, and numerous red buildings in the background with landscaping and fountains. Correspondence on the card reads,"This looks well on a card, but in reality it is bum, in big letters. It is addressed to Miss Rosa Bassano, S. Mill St., Paris, Texas and postmarked Norfolk, Va on Sept 22, 1907.

[Postcard of Stuart Hall in Staunton, Va.]

Postcard of a manilla-colored four story building obscured by a treeline. Stuart Hall's history is written as follows, "Stuart Hall is a new name given to the Virginia Female Institute of Staunton. It was founded in 1848, and is one of the oldest educational institutions for girls in the country. There are four massive buildings, surrounded by about four acres of beautiful land, located on an elevation of 1,450 feet above the sea level, and midway between the picturesque James and Shenandoah Rivers." The letter reads, "We reached here 7 this a. m. Write me soon with love, Sig." The postcard is addressed to "Miss Mamie McFaddin 1141 3rd Ave Huntington, W. Va."

The Staunton Military Academy includes a paragraph of information is as follows, "Staunton Military Academy. Foremost among the educational institutions of the South is Staunton Military Academy, an English, classical, scientific and military boarding school for boys. It is located on a high bluff overlooking the city, and is conceded to be the finest private military institution in the United States. The cost of construction was about $60,000." Below the picture, the name "Sig" is written. The picture on the postcard is described with the following, "Chesapeake & Ohio R. R. Depot. The Depot of the Chesapeak & Ohio Railroad at Staunton is a handsome brick structure, built in 1905 at a cost of about $30,000. It is provided with an extended, covered shed so as to protect very long trains, and the total length of the station, including the platform, is 650 feet." The letter reads, "Hello Mamie, your postcard received this a.m. Why don't you ever write me? With love - Sig." The postcard is addressed to "Miss Mamie McFaddin 1141 3rd Ave. Huntington W. Va."

[Postcard of the Great Pier at Jamestown Exposition]

Postcard of a grand pier extending into the ocean at night, lit only by its own lights. The scene is described on the back with the words, "The Jamestown Exposition. The exposition celebrates the 300th anniversary of the beginning for the Nation. In 1607 John Smith, with other adventurers, set up a stockade on a peninsula of Powhatan's River (afterwards called the James), and named the settlement James City or Jamestown. From this grew Virginia and eventually, the United States. The site of the Exposition is of great natural beauty: it overlooks the historic waters of Hampton Roads, and around it cluster the populous cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News." The message on the back is illegible, but for the signature, "Auntie Curley." The postcard is addressed to "Miss Mamie McFaddin 1906 McFaddin Beaumont, Texas."
