Photograph of a follow-up from photo TX 49-126A. The picture shows a homemade range pitter made from a one-way and mounted or a power lift [sic] of an Allis Chalmers tractor. Photograph of Ed Jenkins, Soil Conservation District [SCD] Co-operator [left] and J. L. Coppodge [right] inspect this 20 acre planting of sericea lespedeza to determine the stage for seed harvesting. The sericea was planted in 3 foot rows in April, 1948 for pasture. Mr. Jenkins states that the sericea has afforded excellent pasture and that his cattle have eaten it readily. TX-47-274.

These fins are set at a 45 degree angle to the blade to pull up roots of brush and to produce the turbulence necessary for seedbed preparation. Photograph of newly pitted rangeland just after a ¾ inch rain fell. The pits caught the rain and more ran off the area. The moisture penetrated into the soil in the pits 10 ½ inches deep, whereas in an adjoining area not pitted the soil was wet only 2 or 3 inches deep. TX-48-277.

Photograph of blue grama grass drilled with a SCS drill in June, 1948. 1948 and 1949 were dry years and little grass showed up. In 1950, good rains fell and now grass covered borrow ditch of water spreading terraces. Some weeping lovegrass and Lehman's lovegrass are present. TX-47-310.

Photograph of King Ranch Bluestem grass. Printed description on back: "King Ranch [K. R.] bluestem planted in 1951 overseeded with vetch and fertilized with phosphate in 1952. The vetch was volunteered each year since this soil is in excellent physical condition due to this treatment. Moisture penetration after 3.3 inches of rain was 24 inches where this KR Bluestem was growing. on an acre just across the fence where the astrida has been growing for about 15 years, moisture penetration from this same was only 10 inches. This is evidence of soil condition benefits of KR bluestem and vetch were grown together."

Photograph of poison weed plots on the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station. Members of the Texas Section, American Society of Range Management view the enclosures while on a field tour. Livestock were excluded from the area since October, 1951. Various locoweed control treatments have been tried. One outstanding result of the enclosures is in the recovery of cane bluestem grass. The area receives a little extra water from the adjacent highlands. Outside the plot the few cane bluestem plants found were closely grazed. Blue grama and buffalo grass predominated. Inside the enclosure, bluestem predominated in spots, with a great increase in vigor and the number of plants. TX-48-350.

Photograph of Big Bend National Park, showing a part of the Tornillo Flats, where pitting was done last winter in strips. Where the pits are, they caught 2.4 inches of rain and was absorbed into the ground. A thick cover of annuals resulted, mostly 6-week grama, with some seedlings of perennials that were seeded following pitting. The strips not pitted are badly crusted and almost no water penetrated the soil. The area is almost bare. TX-48-176.
