An Artist at War: The Journal of John Gaitha Browning
An edited version of artist John Gaitha Browning's personal journal from his time in the United States Army during World War II, specifically two years in the South Pacific. The book includes typewritten journal entries, reformatted journal entries, some of his illustrations, photographs, letters he wrote, and maps of where he was stationed. Includes an epilogue about Browning's life after the final entry. Index starts on page 325.

A letter addressed to Honorable Francis B. Sayer, U. S. High Commissioner, Manila, Philippine Islands, from T. N. Carswell, For the Committee, Committee on Americanism, American Legion, dated December 5, 1941. The letter discusses the promotion of a "What is Americanism?" campaign. The campaign is defined as "seeking more light in the form of a contribution", the contribution being the answer to the question, "What is Americanism?". The answer will then be used "to help stimulate an American Revival comparable in results to the periods of the Revolution, the Making of the Constitution, and the Civil War" stressing that the country's destiny depends on these answers.

Nimitz expects to be sent to a smaller gunboat, but admits he would rather stay on the Ohio and be overlooked in all the shuffling.

He also mentions the prospect of going to China and being able to visit various cities there. He anticipates staying aboard the USS Ohio (BB-12) until the next summer when new passed midshipmen arrive to fill posts and he is moved to a smaller ship. Nimitz mentions fishing for sharks in Manila Bay and recalls all the various pets aboard the ship. Nimitz also mentions that the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) was bringing John Paul Jones back to the USA from France. This letter is on USS Ohio stationery.
