Postcard of uniformed fire fighters standing near a hand-drawn fire engine. The engine has two poles on its front for the fire fighters to carry, and requires multiple people to move. The engine has the words, " Torrent Veteran" written on its hose. On the back of the postcard, the sender left a handwritten message that says, "Cannot find any cards of the Phila. Fire Dept. -Edna V. Johnson."

Combustion of Coal and Design of Furnaces
From Purpose and scope of Investigations: "The combustion investigations of bureau are carried on in two parts. One part is the study of the process of combustion in the fuel bed as affected by the rate of supplying air through the fuel bed, by the character of the fuel as regards structure and composition, by the thickness of fuel bed, by the method of feeding the coal and the air and by the method of heating the coal. The second part of the investigation is the study of the process of combustion of the gases and other combustible rising from the fuel bed in the combustion space, after a sufficient quantity of air has been added. The results of the study are given in this report."

How to Attract Birds in Northeastern United States
"The means of increasing the number of birds about our homes are few and simple. They comprise adequate protection and the provision of suitable nesting places, food, and water.... This bulletin [recommends] practicable methods of attracting birds about homes [in the northeastern United States]. How to Attract Birds in the Middle Atlantic States
"For economic as well as for aesthetic reasons an effort should be made to attract and protect birds and to increase their numbers. Where proper measures of this kind have been taken an increase of several fold in the bird population has resulted, with decreased losses from depredations of injurious insects. A Simple Way to Increase Crop Yields: Methods Followed by Farmers of the Coastal Plain Section of the Central Atlantic States in Building Up Soil Fertility
"The soils of the coastal plain section of the Central Atlantic States, as a rule, are light in character, have been farmed for generations, and need first of all a liberal supply of organic matter. This need should be met by growing such legumes as crimson clover, cowpeas, soy beans, red clover, and hairy vetch. Rye, buckwheat, and the grasses are also valuable in this connection. Commercial fertilizer and lime should be used freely when necessary to stimulate the growth of these soil-improving crops. By arranging the cropping system to include one or more legumes that supply the land with nitrogen and humus, crop yields have been greatly increased on many farms scattered throughout this region. The systems followed on a few of the more successful of these farms are described in detail in the following pages." -- p. 2

A Primer on Explosives for Coal Miners
From Introduction: "Much of the information in this primer has been obtained from experiments conducted by the technologic branch of the United Sates Geological Survey at the mining experiment station at Pittsburgh, Pa. These investigations have shown the recent development of a new type of short-flame explosives, which can be used with greater safety than black powder in mines where there is dangerous gas or inflammable dust, because the flame from the explosion of black powder lasts from 2,500 to 3,500 times as long does the flame from these newer explosives and is therefore more likely to ignite the gas or dust in such mines."

The Wheat Jointworm and Its Control
Revised edition. "The wheat jointworm is a very small grub which lives in stems of wheat, sucking the juices of the plant and causing a swelling in the stem. The egg from which it hatches is laid in the stem by an insect resembling a small black ant with wings. This insect attacks no other kind of plant. The injury which it does to wheat is very distinct from that caused by the Hessian fly, yet the depredations of these two insects are often confused by farmers. This paper is intended, therefore, to give a brief outline of the life history and the nature of the injury to the plant by the jointworm so that any farmer may readily recognize its work and be able to apply the measures of control herein recommended." -- p. 3-4

From Preface: "In carrying out such a policy with reference to the subject under consideration, the Bureau of Mines invited the State geologists, mine inspectors, and a number of coal operators and oil and gas well drillers from the States interested to meet representatives of the Bureau of Mines in Pittsburgh, Pa., for a discussion of the subject during February 7 and February 8, 1913. This adjourned meeting of the conference will be held at an early date and its report will be printed in a later edition of this bulletin, with such additional suggestions as may be received by the Bureau of Mines.
