The state national guard division is extremely safety conscious. it achieved a spotless record over the Memorial Day weekend by moving 8,000 men to Fort Chaffee, Ark., in 1,400 vehicles without a single scratch."

Mrs. Francis Walker wrapped a blanket around a frightened, shivering Pekingese dog named "pumpkin." "The firemen said it was dead when they brought it out," said her brother. Fred J. C. Ogle. "It wasn't breathing." Mrs. Walker handled the dog gently. It may be all that is left for her two small children when they return home...."I doubt if there's much left," said Ogle, who is living with his sister and her husband, James P. Walker, a plumber...The two children, Diana, 3, and Jerry Don, 1, are away visiting relatives, Ogle said. The third roomer, Bill Abbott, also was away from home."

Surveyor is a forerunner to the Apollo man-on-the-moon program, designed to probe the moon's environment to make a manned lunar landing safer. A three-alarm fire roared through the Leonhardt Lumber Co., 100 SE 29, late Tuesday night. Fire officials said damage would run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. The flames, shooting 100 feet into the air, quickly consumed the largest part of the huge lumber complex that covers almost a city block. Firemen were unable to slow the blaze until it had reached outside the walls of the office and main lumber sheds. the blaze destroyed the main lumber company office and main lumber sheds. Lumber stacked outside on the south part of the company lot escaped the flames."

The sanctuary is Kite-shaped, a modified greek cross, and seating is arranged on three sides of the pilpit. 'Something Natural' "When we began designing the church the parishoners wanted a seating arrangement which would bring them closer to the priest," he said. "They wanted something more natural.".........Since communion and the altar essentially are the focal point of the entire service at St. John's, it was only natural and more functional that the altar be located near the nave's center, Jones said.
