Erosion Control on Cultivated Field
Photograph of erosion control measures on a cultivated field. This field was formerly farmed with straight down hill rows and the soil suffered badly from silting. Terraces and grassed channels have been constructed and contour cultivation is now practiced. A volunteer crop of wheat serves as winter cover and supplemental pasture for livestock.

Improved Range
Photograph of a heavily timbered area that was in poor range condition. Early June 1955 tow pounds of Kuron (propionic acid) per acre was applied by aero plane. All vegetative growth of shrubs and trees was controlled on 90 % of the shrubs and trees. A definitive percentage of tree kill could not be determined at this time but a tremendous growth of primarily little bluestem can be observed even directly underneath the trees. An excellent seed crop was produced by this area which was completely deferred from grazing during 1955. Soil Unit 12-RP is the prevailing soil type.

Forestry Training
Photograph of Smithville, Okla. Vocational Agriculture class with instructor examining pine tree that should be removed from the forest because it is defective. Small log or pulpwood will be cut from defective trees of this type. A tract of about 80 acres, owned by Story-McKee-Wilson Lumber Company, is set aside as school forest where the Voc. Agri. class study and apply proper forestry practices. Selective cutting has been carried out on 20 acres in the 1955 and 1956 compartment. The high school's senior class receives the net income from this forest project.

New Building at the Brushy Ridge School Site
Photograph of a new building on the old site of Brushy Ridge School. Patrons and School Board completed this building of a class room, hall, assembly room and large kitchen for $2,600. 00. Funds from their school forest donated by J. D. Bates helped furnish the kitchen.

Photograph of a portion of a 200-acre field level bordered in the Washita River bottom. This is the first water after leveling and corrugating. Winter oats were seeded and with Nitrogen fertilizer applied, yeilded 80 bushels per acre in 1953. Seeded to alfalfa in 1953 and with 400 lbs of 0-20-0 per acre produced 7 tons per acre. Water supply comes from the Washita River from a unit supplying 4,000 gallons per minute.
