Caption: "More than 40 Allen highschool students, the principal and superintendent were injured Monday afternoon when a gas explosion ripped through the one-story brick school building. Students were flung against the ceiling and blown through windows by the bomb-like blast which occured at 1:40 p.m. Two of the injured students were in critical condition Monday night, and the principal, Freeman O. Pickle, 48, was still unconscious and believed :very serious." Thirty of the students were rushed to Ada for treatment, and 15 were hospitalized at Valley View hospital there. Five of the eight teen-agers taken to Holdenville were hospitalized...The explosion was set off by J. N. McKeel, superintednent , who struck a match to test for a gas leak after students in his algebra class compained of a "Gasey smell."........."There was a flash - then the explosion," said Dale Plunk, 18-year-old junior. "It was Terrible."...........The superintendent also played a heroic role. Students said he helped hold up the collapsed ceiling so casualities could be rescued. Pickle was teaching the English class in an adjoining room when the blast occured. He received a serious head injury. Five Ada ambulances were rushed …

That is how one girl described a gas explosion Monday afternoon at Allen highschool, where 100 students were in classes. This scene typifies the condition of the entire building after the blast. Forty-eight students have been treated for injuries and more are expected to report to doctors during the day. Twenty-three are in hospitals."
