Goldwin said permanent work to strengthen the pier, one of several which supports the bridge, will be started next week. He said contractions and expansions of the bridge caused by weather resulted in concrete sheering off the part of the peir on whcih the bridge deck rests. This loss of concrete cause the bridge deck to sink slightly, he said, adding the problem doesn't represent any immediate danger to cars using the bridge. When the top of the pier is rebuilt, Godwin said, the road, which is a major route from I-40 to Will Rogers World Airport, will be closed to allow the concrete to set properly. Godwin said the bridge will be closed at about 1 p.m. Friday, July 11, and remain closed until 7 a.m. the following Monday, July 14. Traffic will be detoured east and west to S. Portland and S MacArthur on W Reno, I-40 and SW 29."
