From introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is participating in this evaluation by developing information on the ground-water hydrology of the region, obtaining geologic borehole data, and conducting hydrologic tests in boreholes on and near the WIPP site. From purpose and scope: The purpose of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) program of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is to identify and delineate areas and environments within the Aztec 10X20 Quadrangle, New Mexico and Colorado, that exhibit characteristics favorable for the occurrence of uranium deposits that have the potential to contain at least 100 metric tons U3 08 total endowment with a minimum grade of 100 ppm (0.01 percent) U3 08 . Evaluation is based on geochemical, mineralogic, hydrologic, aerial radiometric, sedimentologic, and general geologic characteristics of the formations in the quadrangle.
