Geology of the Santa Rita Mining Area, New Mexico (open access)

Geology of the Santa Rita Mining Area, New Mexico

From abstract: The Santa Rita mining area (pl. 1), covering 35 square miles of semiarid mountainous land, lies within the Silver City 30-minute quadrangle, Grant County, N. Mex., and includes the most productive part of the Central or Hanover mining district. Ore was produced in this district as early as 1804 and production continued intermittently for a century before the developments were undertaken that led to large-scale copper mining, which began in 1912. The output of zinc, lead, and iron increased markedly about the same time.

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona (open access)

Preliminary Appraisal of the Carnotite Resources of the Carrizo Mountains Area, San Juan County, New Mexico, and Apache County, Arizona

From introduction: A rapid appraisal of the carnotite resources of the Salt Wash sandstone member of the Morrison formation in the Carrizo Mountains area was undertaken by the U. S. Geological Survey late in 1951 in connection with its current project of geologic mapping of the area. Though brief and preliminary, this report provides a summary of production trends and estimated reserves in the area and indicates as far as possible the total potential of the area as a source of uranium. This information may be helpful in planning new milling facilities or other measures to encourage a higher rate of production.

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico (open access)

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico

Abstract: The Jemez Mountains volcanic region, on the west margin of the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico, is the site of studies whose objective is power development using geothermal heat. This report summarizes geohydrologic data obtained to provide background information relative to the geothermal exploration and to investigate the usefulness of hydrology in assessment of the geothermal resource. Eleven tables present chemical, temperature, discharge, and other data for springs, wells, and streams. Accompanying figures show locations of the data points and present temperature profiles and geophysical logs for selected wells.

The Copper and Uranium Deposits of the Coyote District, Mora County, New Mexico (open access)

The Copper and Uranium Deposits of the Coyote District, Mora County, New Mexico

From abstract: The copper and uranium-vanadium deposits of the Coyote district, Mora County, N. Mex., are confined to the lower 2,000 feet of the Sangre de Cristo formation of Pennsylvanian and Permian age. A narrow belt of deposits in steeply dipping or overturned rocks extends for 7 miles along Coyote Creek south of Guadalupita. Earlier studies showed that the copper deposits contained uranium, but both the reserves and the uranium content of the copper-bearing shale are too low to permit the recovery of uranium. However, small, commercial grade uranium deposits have been discovered in sandstone.
