Status of the Ground Water Flow Model for the UMTRA Project, Shiprock, New Mexico, Site (open access)

Status of the Ground Water Flow Model for the UMTRA Project, Shiprock, New Mexico, Site

A two-dimensional numerical model was constructed for the alluvial aquifer in the area of the Uranium Mill Tailings Remedial Action (UMTRA) Project Shiprock, New Mexico, site. This model was used to investigate the effects of various hydrologic parameters on the evolution of the ground water flow field. Results of the model are useful for defining uncertainties in the site conceptual model and suggesting data collection efforts to reduce these uncertainties. The computer code MODFLOW was used to simulate the two-dimensional flow of ground water in the alluvium. The escarpment was represented as a no-flow boundary. The San Juan River was represented with the MODFLOW river package. A uniform hydraulic conductivity distribution with the value estimated by the UMTRA Project Technical Assistance Contractor (TAC) and a uniform recharge distribution was used. Infiltration from the flowing artesian well was represented using the well package. The ground water flow model was calibrated to ground water levels observed in April 1993. Inspection of hydrographs shows that these levels are representative of typical conditions at the site.

New Mexico Geochronology Research Laboratory: Zuni-Bandera volcanic field road log (open access)

New Mexico Geochronology Research Laboratory: Zuni-Bandera volcanic field road log

This field conference was designed to assemble a group of Quaternary researchers to examine the possibility of using the Zuni-Bandera volcanic field in western New Mexico as a test area for evaluating and calibrating various Quaternary dating techniques. The Zuni-Bandera volcanic-field is comprised of a large number of basaltic lava flows ranging in age from about 700 to 3 ka. Older basalts are present in the Mount Taylor volcanic field to the north. Geologic mapping has been completed for a large portion of the Zuni-Bandera volcanic field and a number of geochronological investigations have been initiated in the area. While amending this conference, please consider how you might bring your expertise and capabilities to bear on solving the many problem in Quaternary geochronology.

Geology and Recognition Criteria for Uraniferous Humate Depostis, Grants Uranium Region, New Mexico: Final Report

Extended literature review describing the geologic history and characteristics of the Grants Uranium Region in northwestern New Mexico, particularly the uraniferous humate uranium deposits, "for the purpose of describing those geologic recognition criteria which seem most useful for evaluating areas with potential for new deposits" (p. 13).

Active And Passive Seismic Studies of Geothermal Resources in New Mexico and Investigations of Earthquake Hazards to Geothermal Development (open access)

Active And Passive Seismic Studies of Geothermal Resources in New Mexico and Investigations of Earthquake Hazards to Geothermal Development

Seismic data were collected in southwestern New Mexico to investigate the sources of the geothermal anomalies and to investigate the potential earthquake hazards of geothermal development. No major crustal structure anomalies have been located related to known geothermal resources, and no areas of continual seismicity have been identified, which is interpreted to indicate a lack of active, or recently active crustal intrusions in southwestern New Mexico. Without a magnetic heat source, the geothermal potential of the known anomalies is probably limited to intermediate and low temperature applications (<180/sup 0/C). The lack of continual seismicity indicates low seismic hazard in the area directly related to geothermal development, although the historic and geologically recent tectonic activity should be taken into consideration during any development in the area. A model of forced groundwater convection is presented to explain the geothermal anomalies in southwestern New Mexico, which is consistent with all available geological and geophysical data from the area.

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico (open access)

Geohydrologic Data from the Jemez Mountains and Vicinity, North-Central New Mexico

Abstract: The Jemez Mountains volcanic region, on the west margin of the Rio Grande rift in north-central New Mexico, is the site of studies whose objective is power development using geothermal heat. This report summarizes geohydrologic data obtained to provide background information relative to the geothermal exploration and to investigate the usefulness of hydrology in assessment of the geothermal resource. Eleven tables present chemical, temperature, discharge, and other data for springs, wells, and streams. Accompanying figures show locations of the data points and present temperature profiles and geophysical logs for selected wells.
