Colors were used to outline territories in the United States, Mexico and the Mexican states, and individual countries in South America. Some cities, bodies of water and geographic features are marked (with relief shown by hachures). There is a key to the "Classification of Places" on the right side of the map showing the symbolic representations of city populations. There is also a pictorial elevation chart at the bottom of the map showing the mountains of the region.
