From Scope of Report: "The first part of this report outlines the present factors in the problem of coking Illinois coals and points out the future prospects. The second part of this report deals with the character of Illinois coals, their nature, physical properties, and chemical composition. The last part describes the tests made and gives detailed results."

From Purpose and scope of Investigations: "The combustion investigations of bureau are carried on in two parts. One part is the study of the process of combustion in the fuel bed as affected by the rate of supplying air through the fuel bed, by the character of the fuel as regards structure and composition, by the thickness of fuel bed, by the method of feeding the coal and the air and by the method of heating the coal. The second part of the investigation is the study of the process of combustion of the gases and other combustible rising from the fuel bed in the combustion space, after a sufficient quantity of air has been added. The results of the study are given in this report."

Patent for improved keyboards for writing machines "having its keys so arranged that the fingers of the operator may rest upon the keyboard in an easy and natural manner, the keys being so disposed with relation to each other that the fingers of the operator may reach all of them with the least possible strain or exertion" (lines 16-22). This improvement allows the operator to work at maximum speed and efficiency.

Postcard from E. Lucas to Lucy Dodge, discussing the safety of a boxy Lucy sent her, her own illness, and the city of Boerne, Texas. The postcard features a photograph, colored in with ink, of a driveway along the side of a tall sloping hill and the surrounding area. Further down the winding dirt drive, there is a suspension bridge across the road. The environment has lots of scrub brush and small, bushy trees.

From Introduction: "The report deals briefly with the dangers of black blasting powder now in such common use in coal mining. It discusses the development of permissible explosives and their introduction into Illinois coal mines and points out the characteristic differences between permissible explosives and black blasting powder. "

Patent for writing-machine mechanism which prolongs the life of the ribbon and provides "means to rotate the platen step by step at each actuation of one or more of the keys" (line 20).
