Mesaverde Uranium Deposits in the Yale Point-Black Mountain Area, Arizona (open access)

Mesaverde Uranium Deposits in the Yale Point-Black Mountain Area, Arizona

Abstract: To date uranium deposits have been confined to a thin sandstone in a zone near the contact of the Middle and Lower Members of the Toreva Formation and as a leach in the Lower Sandstone Member. On a large scale the deposits are apparently restricted to zones of tectonic deformation. Locally mineralization is primarily controlled by small intraformational channels and cross bedding, and is usually associated with carbonaceous material and quartzose sand lenses.

The Occurrence of Uranium in the Diamond Head Group, Sierrita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona (open access)

The Occurrence of Uranium in the Diamond Head Group, Sierrita Mountains, Pima County, Arizona

Abstract: The Diamond Head droup area is entirely igneous. Tight fractures in alaskite and granite, which have been altered by heiratite and kaolinization contain narrow seams and very locally, pods of sooty uraninite. A greater percentage of the structures in the area strike about east-west and dip steeply to the north, while the radioactive structures have similar strike, they dip steeply to both the north and the south. A drift has been driven on a mineralized structure far enough to ascertain that the general character of the mineralization is very narrow seams. Many such seams exists but are scattered throughout the area.

Geology of Uranium Deposits in Tertiary Lake Sediments of Southwestern Yavapai County, Arizona (open access)

Geology of Uranium Deposits in Tertiary Lake Sediments of Southwestern Yavapai County, Arizona

From purpose and scope: and primary objective was to determine the extent and grade of ore present and the future potential of the district. The second and broader objective was to learn the relationship of ore to stratigraphy and structure, in order to outline similar areas favorable for prospecting.

A Preliminary Investigation of Triassic Rocks in the Lukachukai Mountains, Arizona (open access)

A Preliminary Investigation of Triassic Rocks in the Lukachukai Mountains, Arizona

Abstract: During the summer of 1955, two test holes were drilled into the Triassic Chinle Formation in the Lukachukai Mountains near Cove, Arizona, to obtain geologic information. Brief airborne and ground reconnaissance was made of Triassic outcrops near Cove. No anomalous radioactivity was found in the test holes, but chemical tests showed concentrations of heavy metals in conglomerate lenses in the Chinle Formation. Channel sandstones in the middle part of the Petrified Forest Member appear to be the most favorable for mineralization. The Shinarump Member, here underlain by a permeable unit, and occurring at depths greater than 500 feet, appears less promising for uranium exploration.

Preliminary Report on a Uranium Occurrence and Regional Geology in the Cherry Creek Area, Gila County, Arizona

Introduction: A reconnaissance of the Black Brush property was made by geologists of the Atomic Energy Commission in March, 1955. This anomalous area was located by an earlier airborne radiometric survey. the examination consisted of preliminary sampling and surface and underground radiometric traversing.

Geology of the Christmas Copper Mine, Gila County, Arizona (open access)

Geology of the Christmas Copper Mine, Gila County, Arizona

From introduction: The exploration project at Christmas was carried on cooperatively by the Geological Survey and U. S. Bureau of Mines. Mr. 0. M. Bishop, Engineer for the Bureau of Mines, examined the property and in his report of June 6, 1942 recommended that six holes be drilled from the 800 level of the mine. The Bureau of Mines began drilling in September 1942, and the Survey investigations began a month later. Since any ore bodies discovered below the 800 level would be inaccessible until a deeper level could be developed, the Bureau and Survey decided to explore from higher levels where resulting benefits could be more quickly realized. Drilling from the upper levels was begun early in 1943.

Mineral Resources of the San Carlos Indian Reservation, Arizona (open access)

Mineral Resources of the San Carlos Indian Reservation, Arizona

From abstract: At the request of the Council of the San Carlos Apache Tribe the U. S. Geological Survey entered into a cooperative agreement calling for a brief reconnaissance study to determine, as far as practical, the mineral potential of the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Five months of field work was done during the winter and spring of 1952-53. About 30 percent of the reservation is covered by alluvial deposits of late Tertiary, Pleistocene, and Recent age, and another 60 percent is covered by volcanic rocks of Tertiary and perhaps Pleistocene age. These rocks are younger than the major epochs of metallization in southeastern Arizona. The remainder of the area is underlain by pre-Cambrian and Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, pre-Cambrian granite, and pre-Devonian diabase.
