[Harper's Weekly: Camp Ford, Texas Sketch]
Hand-colored print of the Civil War camp, Camp Ford took from an 1865 issue of Harper's Weekly, page 132. Camp Ford, located near Tyler, Texas was established in 1863 as a Confederate prison camp during the Civil War. Over the course of two years, the camp held about 6,000 prisoners and was one of the largest Confederate prison camps west of the Mississippi River. George Washington Simmons, pictured holding a pail, was the paymaster of the USS Clifton, captured at Sabine Pass on September 8, 1863. The crew was initially incarcerated at Camp Groce near Hempstead, but the prisoners were all moved to Camp Ford in December 1863. Simmons was in the Prisoner exchange that occurred at Red River Landing on February 25, 1865. The lithograph made from his sketch was published in New York on March 4, 1865, only a week after his exchange.

Anal Speculum.
Patent for a new and improved anal speculum. This design is "to so construct the several parts that there will be no rough or raised edges to interfere with its insertion in the anal passage; secondly, to so construct [the] improved speculum that it may be readily used as a bi-valve or dilator; thirdly, to form a locking-joint on the meeting edges of the shells forming the speculum, whereby the sections are prevented from overlapping each other to avoid pinching or injury to the walls of the anal passage while the instrument is being inserted; fourthly, to provide a plug for [the] improved speculum" (lines 17-29).

Clothes Hook.
Patent for a new and improved clothing hook. This design utilizes elastic, vulcanized rubber end-pieces for the hooks to hold the article of clothing more effectively. These end-pieces can be produced more cheaply than their threaded-metal counterparts, which require screwing on.

Patent for a simple, efficient, and economical lifting jack "which is particularly designed for removing and replacing the brasses in the journal boxes of freight, passenger and other railway cars, and which is so constructed that it can bear against the shoulder formed by the concave part of the car wheel in proximity to the tread and thus avoid the employment of special blocking for the jack, thereby enabling it to be quickly set and operated at any place without preparation of blocking as a foundation for sustaining the jack" (lines 10-21).

Shirt-Starching Machine.
Patent for improvements in shirt-starching machines by using a combination of a shirt holding device having an oscillatory motion for one-fourth of a full revolution, and a semi-cylindrical starch-holding receptacle with longitudinal rubber bottom; when the shirt-holder is turned, shirts are crowded into the compartments, with the bosoms and wristbands hanging outside. When the door is closed, shirt-bosoms and wristbands are thoroughly starched. Illustration is included.
