Oral History Interview with A. K. Sheffield, May 20, 2016

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with A K Sheffield. Sheffield joined the Navy in late 1943. He completed Armed Guard School in San Diego. He served with the Navy Armed Guard aboard a transport ship, and traveled to the Philippine Islands. In May of 1944, Sheffield was aboard the SS Henry Bergh when it ran aground on the Farallon Islands, and shares details of those events. He traveled through the Pacific Islands, to Japan and throughout the Atlantic. Sheffield does not speak of participating in any battles or combat. He returned home aboard USS Iowa (BB-61) after the war ended in late 1945.

Smith's Irrigated Pasture and Cattle

The back of the photograph proclaims, "Irrigated pasture planted in 1948 under level tub irrigation. Mixture" 4 lbs. perennial rye, 4 lbs. Orchardgrass, 2 lbs. Crested wheat, 2 lbs. Dallis grass [sic], 3 lbs. southern smooth brome, 2 lbs. white Dutch clover, and 1 lbs. alfalfa per acre. Grazing started April 1950, with 38 acre pasture grazed with 76 steers of medium to low quality. Produced 650 lbs. beef per acre in 10 months. Pasture watered on an 18 to 24 day schedule. Pasture netted Smith over $100 per acre the first year. After pay $0.24 and $0.26 for steers and selling them at a $0.02 to $0.03 loss. The 2X, 18, and 20 soil on which pasture planted netted operator more money than cotton in adjacent 2 and 2X soil that made approximately 1.9 bales of cotton per acre. Smith is putting seventy-five additional acres to irrigated pastures this year."
