The back of the photograph proclaims, “Cattle on the McFarlin ranch, a cooperator with the Hughes County SWCD, after a 7 inch snow. Loamy Prairie range site, was in excellent condition. The grass was properly used creating a condition to hold the snow where it fell.”

Photograph of Leon Russell, Star Route, Calvin, OK, was selcted by the Hughes County Soil & Water Conservation District [SWCD] as a Conservation Farmer for the month of October, 1961. Mr. Russell has lived on this farm for 33 years. He is watching his cattle graze Sericea lespedeze. Mr. Russell has 30 acres of Sericea which is grazed regularly throughout the warm season. He also puts up about 1200 bales annully for his only source of hay. OK-1445-1.
