Letter from Maud Fentress to her son David in which she discusses Frank's illness; the problems Jimmie has had in his Company; and the reluctance of some men to go to war. She tells him the current price of swine. She continues to give a description of the division of Union and Confederacy supporters around her. She finishes the letter with news of the war, the shortage of physicians, and the people she knows who are unwell.

Patent for a new and improved ant trap. This design consists "[i]n an ant-trap, the combination, with a trough formed with a top [that is] flanged . . . of a box connected thereto by a tube terminating in a disk . . . [and] of the connecting-tubes, box, and fence" (lines 62-68).

Patent for an ironing-table that can be folded compactly while not in use and prevents accidental collapsing. The two legs at the narrower end of the table are a solid piece of wood until halfway, at which point they separate into separate legs and a fastening device is attached with a hinge. A brace can be attached with the fastening device that both sets of table legs in place. Both sets of legs and the brace fold up for storage.

Patent for an improvement on a previous patent granted to the inventor (no. 526,962)for a disk cultivator. The improvement is that "the disks are supported at any point on the under side of the disk-frame and in means whereby the disk-supporting frame may be elevated from the ground" (lines 16-19).
