Poisoning and Production in a Power Plant (open access)

Poisoning and Production in a Power Plant

The yield of 49, the efficiency of production of 49, and poisoning in a power plant are discussed. Only the crudest of estimates of the poisoning are possible: these indicated that production will probably not be hampered by poisoning. In this case the yield of 49 could be as high as 3 kg/ton but only about 2 kg/ton is compatible with a fairly high efficiency. In the case that production is stopped by poisoning, smaller yields, proportional to the tolerable loss in k, are obtained. In this case the yield will be improved by a factor of 2 or 3 if only the most poisoned parts are extracted and replaced by new uranium.

Analysis for Oxide in Thorium Metal (open access)

Analysis for Oxide in Thorium Metal

Abstract. to estimate the oxygen picked up by thorium in casting a rapid method of running the acid insoluble content was developed. the quickest procedure consists of reacting with mixed acids, fuming with perchloric and filtration to separate the "free" thorium from the "combined". The precipitate is ignited and weighed as thorium dioxide.

Precipitation of Thorium Oxalate from Nitric Acid Solutions (open access)

Precipitation of Thorium Oxalate from Nitric Acid Solutions

Introduction. It has been known for a long time that thorium is precipitated by oxalic acid in acid solutions, but a survey of the literature showed no study of the limits of the acidity and oxalic acid excess which yield quantitative results. V. I. Spitzin reports on the solubility of thorium oxalate in varying concentrations of several acids, but the effect of an excess oxalic acid is not included. Since solutions are sometimes presented for analysis that contain more than the recommended two per cent mineral acid, it would be advantageous to be able to quantitatively remove the thorium without otherwise altering the solutions. This was especially of interest in solutions containing bismuth, since it was hoped that some amounts of thorium could be precipitated in nitric acid solutions containing large quantities of bismuth. In removing the bismuth, first by a bismuth oxychloride precipitation, thee is every opportunity for carrying of the thorium.

Quicksilver Deposits of the Parkfield District, California (open access)

Quicksilver Deposits of the Parkfield District, California

From abstract: The Parkfield district, one of the minor California quicksilver districts, lies on the southern end of the Diablo Range, in the southeastern part of Monterey County and the westernmost tip of Kings County. (...) Two geologically similar areas, separated by 10 miles of unmineralized rocks, have been mapped. These areas contain (1) sedimentary, volcanic, and metamorphic rocks belonging to the Franciscan formation, of probable Jurassic age, (2) sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous age, (3) a few outcrops of fossiliferous strata assigned to the Temblor formation, of middle Miocene age, (4) large masses of serpentine emplaced along fault zones in post-Miocene time, (5) lenses of silica-carbonate rock formed by the alteration of the serpentine, and (6) large areas of landslide.

Direct Current Electromagnetic Pumps

Abstract: "A number of direct current conduction type electromagnetic pumps for liquid metals were constructed. Pumping capacities of over 400 gpm and efficiencies of over 50 percent were obtained. NaK alloy at temperatures up to 400 C was used in the test. The large currents required were obtained from rectifiers or from a homopolar generator constructed for the purpose."

Geology of the Portage Pass Area, Alaska (open access)

Geology of the Portage Pass Area, Alaska

Abstract: The Portage Pass area is in south-central Alaska, and includes part of the narrow neck of land that joins the Kenai Peninsula with the mainland to the north. This region is in general mountainous, elevations ranging from sea level to more than 4,000 feet on the peaks bordering the area. Several glaciers, all of which are apparently receding, extend into the area. Vegetation, chiefly alder and cottonwood on the valley lowlands and some spruce and hemlock on the lower slopes, extends to an elevation of about 1,000 feet, above which the slopes are bare except for occasional clumps of brush. The bedrock of the entire area is slate, argillite, and graywacke, apparently part of the same great series that extends from the Kenai Peninsula into the Prince William Sound region and is at least in part of Cretaceous age. The only igneous rocks recognized in the area are a few acidic dikes and a small diabase dike. Small, irregular quartz veinlets are widespread. The structure is not only complex but, owing to extensive metamorphism, is in many places obscure. A general northeast strike and steep to vertical dips of both bedding and cleavage planes are the rule, but there …
