Industrial Alcohol: Uses and Statistics (open access)

Industrial Alcohol: Uses and Statistics

"It is important that the farmer should have a general idea of the uses to which industrial alcohol (usually denatured) may be devoted. While this information is not necessary for the production of the raw materials, it is nevertheless valuable in indicating the particular lines of industrial development which may be promoted by free alcohol in the arts as related to the welfare of agriculture. The technical uses of alcohol are extremely numerous, and no attempt will be made to give them all, but only to mention those which are of the greatest importance." -- p. 5. Topics include the use of alcohol for heating and illumination in stoves and lamps, as fuel for motors, as a product in farm operations, and as a drink. Statistics on alcohol production in the United States, Great Britain, France, and Germany are included at the end.

Cooperative Bull Associations (open access)

Cooperative Bull Associations

"Cooperative bull associations are formed by farmers for the joint ownership, use, and exchange of pure-bred bulls. The purchase price and cost of maintenance are distributed according to the number of cows owned by each, thereby giving the farmer an opportunity to build up his herd at minimum expense. The organization also helps its members to market dairy stock and dairy products, to fight contagious diseases of cattle intelligently, and in other ways assists in improving the dairy industry. The bull association does not give something for nothing, but with an outlay of $50 can furnish a share in five pure-bred bulls. These bulls cannot increase the production of the cows in a herd, but they may double the production of their daughters. The daughters of association bulls and grade cows can never be registered, but in all other respects they may be the equal of purebreds." -- p. 2

The Common Mealybugs and Its Control in California (open access)

The Common Mealybugs and Its Control in California

"No one method for the control of the common mealybug can be recommended under all conditions. The remedy or remedies to be used will depend upon whether the trees are in house lots or orchards, whether few or many, and the infestation light or severe. In the case of severe infestation it will depend also upon the kind of fruit. This insect infests oranges of all varieties, grapefruit, lemons, and all other kinds of citrus fruit grown in California, causing deformity, weakening and dropping of much immature fruit, and the discoloration and weakening of the rind of the fruit maturing. This bulletin discusses the three remedies which have been widely used; namely, fumigation, spraying, and the artificial spread of insect enemies, points out the sphere of usefulness of each method, and shows, on pages 14-15, how they may be combined so as to secure complete control." -- p. 2

The Gas Tractor in Eastern Farming

This bulletin discusses gas tractors with regard to their operation and maintenance in relation to farming practices in the eastern United States, particularly in New York. "Tractors using gasoline or kerosene are increasing in numbers on eastern farms. More than 250 New York State farmers furnished detailed reports of their experience with tractors during 1917 and the spring of 1918, and on these the information given in this bulletin is based." -- p. 2

Harvesting Hay with the Sweep-Rake: A Means by Which Eastern Hay-Growers May Save Labor (open access)

Harvesting Hay with the Sweep-Rake: A Means by Which Eastern Hay-Growers May Save Labor

"The sweep-rake offers the possibility of reducing by the about 50 per cent the labor required in harvesting hay compared with the methods now commonly used in the East. This implement is used most extensively in the hay-growing sections of the West, but is entirely practicable under conditions prevailing in many eastern sections. It is comparatively inexpensive and costs little for repairs. It eliminates a great deal of irksome hand labor. With the sweep-rake a boy who can drive a team can do the same work as a man. Many eastern hay-growers are unacquainted with the value of this tool, and the purpose of this bulletin is to bring it to their attention and urge its consideration as a means of relieving the shortage of farm labor." -- p. 2

Organization, Financing, and Administration of Drainage Districts

"This bulletin is prepared to aid landowners, district officials, and others interested in forming drainage districts for the purpose of reclaiming swamp and overflowed lands. It presents methods of organizing the interested property owners and principles which should be considered in the administration and financing of drainage districts. It is particularly applicable to drainage districts in the humid regions of the United States. Because the laws in no two states are exactly alike, the subject necessarily must be treated in a general way." -- p. 3

Spraying for the Control of Insects and Mites Attacking Citrus Trees in Florida (open access)

Spraying for the Control of Insects and Mites Attacking Citrus Trees in Florida

"Under Florida conditions spraying is the most effective method for the control of citrus pests. In the past there have been many failures, and much money has been expended without adequate returns to the grower in better fruit and increased yields. These failures have been due to various causes, such as improper equipment, ineffective insecticides, and a lack of a proper spraying schedule. This bulletin gives information regarding the best equipment for Florida conditions, and directions for preparing effective homemade insecticides. There is also given a spraying schedule that has proved satisfactory after several years of practical experience and such other information as will enable the grower to control citrus pests in a satisfactory manner. Spraying improves the grades of the fruit and increases the yield of the trees out of all proportion to its cost, if the work is done properly." -- p. 2

The Woolly White Fly in Florida Citrus Groves

"The rapid spread of the woolly white fly over a greater portion of the citrus-producing sections of Florida has caused some alarm among the owners of orange groves. This bulletin contains information regarding the introduction of the woolly white fly into the United States and its subsequent spread. It shows the grower how to distinguish this pest from all other white flies attacking citrus in Florida, gives a general outline of its life history, tells something about its natural enemies, which usually control it, and describes the remedial measures to be applied in case the natural enemies do not seem to promise aid in the near future." -- p. 2

Frost and the Prevention of Damage by It (open access)

Frost and the Prevention of Damage by It

Revised edition. "All frost protection methods, from the simplest to the most complicated, can be carried on more successfully if the processes by which the earth's surface cools at night and the factors which influence the rate of cooling are well understood. In the first part of this bulletin an attempt has been made to describe in a simple, elementary manner the changes that take place at and near the earth's surface on a frosty night, so that persons protecting plants or trees may be able to understand how their protective devices operate to prevent damage and in what manner they are most efficient. In treating a matter of this kind it is practically impossible to eliminate all technical terms, but so far as possible these have been carefully explained in simple language. The larger portion is given over to a discussion of the various methods and devices now being used for protection against frost, together with a chapter on temperatures injurious to plants, blossoms, and fruit." -- p. 2
