Kinematics of the Relativistic Two-Body Problem

Abstract: "The kinematics of elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, and the two body reaction problem is developed in the relativistic limit and exact expressions obtained for the energies, angles, and solid-angle transformations involved. The results are specialized for zero rest mass of one or more of the particles involved. An outline for the coding of the problem on the I.B.M. Electronic Data Processing Machine, Type 701 is presented."

Literature Survey on World Isotope and Radiation Technology : First Interim Report Covering the Period from June 15, 1961 to August 14, 1961

Abstract: "This is the first interim report of a literature survey investigating the uses and technology of radioscopes in the countries of the world, with particular emphasis necessarily placed on those more highly industrialized nations. Part I includes a general summary of the quantity and quality of radioisotope work being performed in these countries. Among the outstanding radioisotope applications with respect to quantity is the work of Japan in chemical research, that of USSR in metals research, and that in the USA in medical research. A detailed qualitative examination of the relatively narrow region of radioisotope applications in leak detection is also presented. Part II of this report gives a direct comparison between the progress and status of the US and the USSR in the varied uses of radio-isotopes."

An Application of the Concepts of Particle Packing to the Consolication of Silicon Carbide Powders (open access)

An Application of the Concepts of Particle Packing to the Consolication of Silicon Carbide Powders

From introduction: Silicon carbide is being considered as a basis material for nonmetallic fuel elements because of its high thermal conductivity, low nuclear cross section, high resistance to thermal rupture, and high degree of stability at high temperature in air. A requirement of the fuel elements is that they be thin and have as low porosity as possible. One shape of element under consideration is 0.050 to 0.070 inch thick by a few inches in width and breadth.

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium (open access)

Hydrogen Embrittlement of Zirconium

Abstract: "The amount of hydrogen normally present in zirconium and zirconium alloys suffices to reduce their ductility greatly in an impact test at room temperature, after slow cooling from 600 F. Quenching from 600 F or above gives high impact strength, as does removal of hydrogen by high-temperature vacuum annealing. This report discusses the evidence on hydrogen embrittlement, the diffusion, solid solubility, and equilibrium pressure of hydrogen of hydrogen in zirconium, the microstructure, and the effects of hydrogen and heat treatment on the mechanical properties of zirconium."

Magnetic Properties of Insulators : Quarterly Report No. 2 Covering the Period from May 15, 1961 to August 15, 1961

Abstract: "The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of color centers in additively colored KCl crystals is measured to observe the effects of optical bleaching at room temperature. Earlier measurements on the F-center are confirmed and the susceptibility is measured at 78 and 300 deg K over five decades of power, including the very low power region. The width and the saturation properties of the individual multiplets are studied in detail and the technique of making EPR measurements on inhomogeneously broadened lines is discussed. A calculation is presented which shows that a slight departure from a Lorentzian multiplet shape can account for the saturation data. The bleached crystals show a resonance which has a width of 35 gauss and a different rate of saturation than the F- center. This resonance is associated with the B-band which appears in the optical absorption."

Fall-Out Studies with a Laboratory Controlled Model (open access)

Fall-Out Studies with a Laboratory Controlled Model

From abstract: "To seek information for a better understanding of the phenomena involved in fall-out, a fireball effect was simulated in a small closed room by subjecting various materials to a high-current (~360 amp.) are produced between graphite electrodes, and anode being impregnated with radioactive materials. The time duration of the arc, power dissipated, and distance from the samples were controlled. The radioactivity which remained airborne, that which settled out onto the floor and its distribution, and that deposited on the test material was measured, and percentages of the total measured activity were determined."

Estimated Upper Bounds to the Half-Life of Thermal Decomposition of Ammonia, Hydrogen, Methane, and Propane (open access)

Estimated Upper Bounds to the Half-Life of Thermal Decomposition of Ammonia, Hydrogen, Methane, and Propane

An estimate was made of the upper bound for the half-time of dissociation at 100 atm for ammonia, methane, and propane at 2500 deg K and hydrogen at 5000 deg K. In each case a unimolecular reactron in the homogeneous gas phase was chosen as most suitable for this purpose. Slater's theory has been used to estimate the necessary frequency factors. The upper bounds to the half- time for dissociation range from 3 x 10⁻⁷ to 6 x 10⁻⁶ sec. Extrapolation of decomposition rate data obtained at --1000 deg C and 1 atm pressure gives smaller values for the half-time of dissociation.

Equations Representing Reactor System with Emphasis on KIB Digital Program

"This report is written as a supplement to LAMS 2539. It is hoped that one will be able to read LAMS 2539, with emphasis on the fourth part (Memorandum N-4-79OU by 0. Farmer), with this memorandum to bridge the gaps and understand more about the model used and what the KIB Program can be used for. The system is defined by subsystems or subprograms: Thrust System, Heat Exchanger, Neutron Dynamics, Rod Actuator Dynamics, and Thermocouple Dynamics. The original Kiwi-B Flow System is included in the first part of LAMS 2539. This has been replaced by the newer system which includes a turbo-pump (per R, Bohl & E. Wheatley). This system will not be included here. Recommendations are made for improvement and more work in certain areas."

The Boron-Carbon System: Quarterly Report Number 1, May - June 1960 (open access)

The Boron-Carbon System: Quarterly Report Number 1, May - June 1960

Abstract: A definitive investigation of the boron-carbon equilibrium system is being made by X-ray diffraction, metallographic, and thermal analytical techniques. Alloys are being produced by sintering pressed powder aggregates with subsequent arc melting. Alloys have been made at two atomic percent intervals up to thirty atomic per cent carbon. In the future, higher carbon compositions are to be investigated. Techniques have been worked out for the metallographic preparation of the extremely hard and friable alloys.

The Fabrication of Subassemblies for the Supercritical-Water Reactor (open access)

The Fabrication of Subassemblies for the Supercritical-Water Reactor

In studies of the fabrication of fuel subassemblies for the supercritical-water reactor, the limited ductility of stainless steel-UO₂ fuel sheet made the fabrication of corrugated-flat-plate-type subassemblies impractical. A fabricable MTR-type assembly, 5/8 in. square and 30 in. long, was developed. Methods for edge cladding fuel sheet were developed and a brazing alloy, GE-75, was found to be corrosion resistant in supercritical water.
