Observed Net Heat Loss from the HRT High-Pressure System

An estimate has been obtained of the heat that should be generated in the HRT core in order to hold the system at operating temperature under no-load conditions. This estimate was made by measuring the feed-water rate to the package boiler during an oxygenated water rung. Results are summarized.

Observed performance of the Fuel Sample Cooler (open access)

Observed performance of the Fuel Sample Cooler

Measurements of flow rate through the fuel high-pressure system sampler indicate that the average flow rates is about 0.29 gpm (145 lb/hr) plus or minus 50%, which affords an adequate purge of from 12 to 36 volumes through the sample line if the full fifteen minutes of purging is allowed before isolating the sample. The fuel sample cooler was fund to have adequate capacity to reduce the temperature of the fuel solution form about 275 to 70 C, using pre-heated cooling water at 70 C. Uncertainties in temperature measurements make it impossible to estimate an observed over-all heat transfer coefficient.

Testing of Adsorptive Capacity of Charcoal Beds : HRT Test No II-A 10 b (open access)

Testing of Adsorptive Capacity of Charcoal Beds : HRT Test No II-A 10 b

During the pre-startup phase of the HRT operations, moisture was accidentally introduced into the charcoal bed adsorbers in the off-gas system. Tests have been made to determine the effect of wetting upon the adsorptive properties of the charcoal. The work was divided into two phases, testing of fresh charcoal in the laboratory and testing of the HRT charcoal beds in situ. It is recommended that the beds be dried by heating them to about 40 C and purging each with one to two liters/min of dry instrument air.

Metallographic Examination of ORNL #1, SHE #2 (open access)

Metallographic Examination of ORNL #1, SHE #2

Small Heat Exchanger ORNL #1, type SHE #2, was removed form test stand B after 2071 hours of operation. Thirty-five samples were removed form the entire heat exchanger. The corrosion found on the outside of the tubes exposed to the fluoride mixture ranged to a maximum depth of .004 inches; however, the frequency of occurrence along the tube wall was heavier at the NaK outlet header, which was the hottest area in the heat exchanger. The depth of attack observed on the fluoride side of this heat exchanger was uniform from header to header and did not exceed .004 inches.

Delta-Phase Zirconium Hydride as a Solid Moderator (open access)

Delta-Phase Zirconium Hydride as a Solid Moderator

Abstract: "In a study of the preparation and properties of delta-phase zirconium hydride it was found that large, sound bodies of the hydride can be prepared by direct combination of the elements if the rate of the reaction is retarded by limiting the supply of available hydrogen. Specimens up to 1-in. diameter were prepared using this technique. Because delta phase zirconium hydride does not readily form eutectics with iron-and nickel-base alloys below 1800 F these materials may be utilized for clodding the hydride. Delta-phase zirconium hydride is unaffected by exposure to liquid NaK or to nitrogen gas at temperatures below 1000 F. The hot hardness of delta-phase zirconium hydrid is about 130 kg per mm-2 at room temperature and 40 kg per mm-2 at 1500 F. The mean coefficient of thermal expansion (68 to 1337 F) is 6.5 x 10^-6 per deg F. The thermal conductivity varies from 5.7 Btu/(ft)(hr)(F) at 300 F to 5.1 Btu/(ft)(hr)(F) at 1300 F."

Summary of Corrosion Data for HRT Mockup Operational Period Ending November 5, 1956

The operation of the HRT mockup was on 0.042m UO2SO4, 0.024m H2SO4, and 0.005m CuSO4 at 280 C and 1400 psi pressure. with the O2 content at near 500 ppm. The pump showed bearing wear and high corrosion. The letdown heat exchanger was removed from the mockup and sectioned. The metallographic examination revealed corrosion. Results of corrosion runs on Ti, zircaloy-2, and stainless steel are given.

Some Natural Variations in the Relative Abundance of Copper Isotopes (open access)

Some Natural Variations in the Relative Abundance of Copper Isotopes

Abstract: "The relative isotopic abundance of copper has been measured in a number of minerals. Suites of samples from Michigan and the Colorado Plateau have been examined to determine if local variations due to isotopic exchange or diffusion could be found. The relative isotopic abundance of copper in specimens from a number of other places was also determined. The variations noted were small but in most cases were felt to be significant because they were larger than the experimental error (0.1 percent in the ratio). A total spread of +3 to -8 parts per mil compared to the standard was found in the specimens tested."
