Simple expression are derived for the time dependence of slowing down of neutrons in a simple media. In Section I, a method suggested by age theory is used, while in section II, a two parameter scattering function is employed. Results are compared with exact calculations.

A method for determining zirconium in plutonium-zirconium alloys was required as part of an investigation of alloys containing fissionable material, with possible use in nuclear reactors. Alloys of these two elements were brought into solution with a bisulfate fusion and the zirconium was separated by precipitation with p-bromomandelic acid. Determinations were completed by weighing the zirconium oxide obtained after ignition of the precipitate at 925 degree C. The precision of this recommended procedure was estimated in terms of the standard deviation for quadruplicate determinations, made with weight aliquots from dissolved alloy samples. The range for the standard deviation was 0.5 to 1.7 parts per thousand for samples from which aliquots each containing 9 to 15 mg of zirconium were selected. The complete recovery of zirconium from solutions of pure zirconyl chloride and plutonium trichloride was shown by the 95 percent confidence limits of 99.9 +- 0.3 percent for the average of four determinations, observed with samples containing 5 to12 mg of zirconium in the presence of 10 to 20 mg of plutonium. The following report describes a high speed framing camera that was developed at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. It contains a rotating mirror and 170 framing lenses working at f/26 to produce frame pictures 1.2 x 1.4 centimeters in size.

This report follows a manuscript report made in January 11, 1952, and provides results of a survey that gives corrections as well as suggestions for new and local sources of aggregate material in comparison to the original report. These reports were made in response to a heavy desire of improvement in reactor design and shielding.

This technical report presents the process design for the thorium semi-works plant which will be located at the Feed Materials Production Center, Fernald, Ohio. It contains the process information required for the layout and detailed mechanical design of the thorium plant.

This report follows the investigation of the uranium-zirconium system reported that was limited to the alloys which could be prepared by melting in beryllia with induction heating. A diagram is presented for the section between 0 and 43 atomic percent zirconium.

The work reported here is a continuation of that reported in UCRL-1962. Approximate breakdown voltages and spark damage estimates have been made for the metals Ag, Ti, Aluminum Alloy 52-SO, Stainless Steel 316 and various combinations of Inconel and Cu.

This report follows a study that was undertaken to evaluate the practicality if removing the heat from the reactor cooling water by means of a "flash cooler" and to compare its economics with that of the conventional heat exchange system.

Introduction: "Based on experimental data and on conservative theoretical considerations, an estimate has been made of the relation of the mining U-235 critical mass to the hydrogen moderation for uranium material at the U-235 assays for which experimental information is available. These estimates have been used in indicating maximum safe amounts for conditions where definite moderation limitations can be established."

Certain types of neutron diffusion calculations were considerably simplified when the Serber.Wilson Method was introduced about eight years ago. This method, semi-empirical In nature and named after its co-discoverers, was first formulated for the one-velocity isotropic theory and applied to spherical geometries. Within these limits it has in general proved to be a fairly accurate method. If restricted source-free case it has, in addition, turned out to be quite manageable both analytically and numerically.

This technical report summarizes the apparent hematological changes in 10 individuals, exposed to total-body gamma radiation in near tolerance amounts, over a period of four and one-half years. Two control groups, in addition to the exposed group, were used for comparative purposes. Control group I received essentially no gamma or beta radiations. Control group II received exposures at least a factor of 10 below those of the exposed group. The average total leukocyte count, absolute neutrophil value, and absolute lymphocyte value, were determined for each individual and for all groups. Analysis of data indicates a significant depression of the absolute lymphocyte value of the exposed group as compared with those of the control groups.

Abstract: "A quantitative method for the determination of individual rare earths in thorium down to a level of 0.05 ppm, is described. The procedure consists of a chromatographic cellulose-columns separation followed by a solution-type spectrographic determination. Values are given for the recovery of a number of rare earths using this combined procedure."

The following report describes the process to determine the method for determination of americium in the presence of plutonium and uranium.

Summary: "Analysis of the power-level transient following the rapid insertion of a large absorber into an operating pile provides an excellent means of determining the reactivity effect of the absorber . Recent improvements in instrumentation make possible the measurement of the strength of the entire vertical safety rod system of the production units by means of this technique, and rapid calibration of the high-speed control rods by means of this technique, and rapid calibration of the high-speed control rods in the H unit is also feasible. The details of the method are presented together with recent experimental confirmation from the Test Pile of certain features of the theory."

The purpose of this report is to investigate the effect of neutrons being captured before they are completely slowed down and have the chance to leak out and thus correspondingly increase the multiplication factor of the lattice.
