Some Experiments Relating Ion Diffusion in a Plasma to the Neutral Gas Density in the Presence of a Magnetic Field

In some recent experiments the ion density in a plasma was measured as a function of radial distance from a d-c arc source of ions for the magnetic field intensities from 2500 to 14000 oersted. The diffusion coefficient appeared to very inversely as the square of the magnetic field strength, D~1/H2. The absolute value of D was shown to be approximately that which would be predicted by the collision diffusion theory when account is taken of the shorting effect of the end walls. The purpose of this report is to continue the examination of ion diffusion in a plasma and field experimentally the relation between the diffusion coefficient and the neutral gas pressure for a constant magnetic field.

Uranium-235 Abundance by Gamma Spectrometry

Techniques are described for determining U-235 abundance by measurement of the intensity of 0.18 Mev gamma radiation. One method involves measurement of the ratio of the intensity of 0.18-Mev radiation to that of 0.1 Mev radiation. The preferred technique consists of chemical separation of uranium followed by direct counting of 0.18-Mev photons. Application has been made in analysis of uranium samples of abundances in the range of 0.05% to 93%. Accuracy appears to be better than 3% if the abundance is between 0.7% and 100%. Findings in the self-absorption of 0.18 Mev radiation in uranium oxide are presented.

A Cost Analysis of the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant

A capital cost breakdown of the Idaho Chemical Processing Plant, a directly maintained remotely operated plant for processing spent enriched uranium fuel assemblies from reactors, is presented. The capital investment in the plant, including design, construction, training, and preoperational costs, an estimate of the direct costs incurred by the Atomic Energy Commission, and a proportional part of the costs of Central Facilities, including the value of the land and improvements theorem when acquired by the Commision, was $31,105,899. The cost of design and construction was $25,212,231, of which $3,773,357 was expanded on design and inspection.

Sizes of U. S. Steam- Electric Plants

At the present time, plants in the 100-500Mv size range are more numerous and carry the greatest portion (over 50%) of the total steam-electric plant load in the U.S. utilities industry. The contribution of plants of over 1,000-Mv capacity is increasing more rapidly than any other size clarification and at present represents about 10% of the total capacity. By 1962 the TVA will have six plants with capacities of over 1,000-Mv. The largest steam-electric plant in the U.S. is the TVA plant at Kingston, Tenn., with a nameplate capacity of 1,440-Mv. Turbine-generator units are also following a trend of ever-increasing size. In present construction, the 150-200 Mv size range for units is the most common and represents the greatest contribution to capacity. Two units of 500-Mv nameplate rating each, the largest in the U.S., are on order by the TVA, and an 800 Mv unit is contemplated.

Ion Energy Distribution, Energy Degradation, and Exponentiation Criteria in a Plasma Formed by Beam Trapping and Charge Transfer

An approximation is derived for the time constant which characterizes the rate of energy loss of fast ions moving through a plasma. Using particle and energy-balance equations a simple approximate criterion is derived for the estimation of the importance of energy degradation during plasma buildup in a DCX type machine. Next, there is derived the steady-state ion energy distribution for a case in which energy losses are to electrons at a given temperature and particle losses are by charge exchange. The distribution function is used to compute loss rate, upper critical current, ionization rate, and other functions of interest. Quantitative application is made to DCX-2 under various conditions of operation of carbon and deuterium arcs.

The nuclear characteristics and fuel costs of a number of aqueous homogeneous reactors have been estimated. Most of the reactors studied were cylindrical, two-region power-breeders variously having between 0 and 300 g/l of thorium in the core and between 500 and 1000 g/l of thorium in the blanket. The results of the calculations, including breeding ration, fuel inventories, doubling times, and net fuel costs, are summarized in this report.

Nuclear Computations for HRE-3 Design : Equilibrium Results

Various nuclear characteristics of two-region spherical homogeneous reactors have been computed in order to provide information for the design of HRE-3. Equilibrium isotope concentrations were established using an ORACLE code, and a two-group model was used to obtain critical concentrations and flux distributions. Breeding ratio is plotted as a function of reactor size, blanket thorium concentration, and other design and operating parameters, and the time required for a demonstration breeding is discussed. Tables of results, including neutron balances, are given for selected reactors. a number or relations are presented for estimating the effects of fission products, copper, corrosion products, H2O, and the core tank on breeding ratio.

Blake and his co-workers have shown that uranium and other elements can be extracted from acid solutions by various type of organo-phosphorous compounds. Early investigations in the laboratory have demonstrated the applicability of tri-n-alkyl phosphine oxides to the extraction of metal ions from acidic solutions for analytical purposes. This paper is concerned with a similar qualitative investigation of the extraction of metal ions with a di-alkyl phosphoric acid, di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EPHA).

This technical report is the second of a series which concerns the separation of ions by solvent extraction with trialkyl phosphine oxides (TOPO). This investigation has consisted in the extraction of various ions from acidic solutions with extractants that are representative of these ore specific phosphine oxides - triphenylphosphine oxide (THPO) and tris-2-ethylhexylphosihine oxides (TEHPO). In general it is observed that: (a) the order of increasing capacity of extraction is THPO > TOPO >TEHPO. (b) No ion is extracted by THPO or TEHPO that is not extracted by TOPO under certain conditions. (c) The effect of hydrogen ion concentration is greater in TEHPO systems than it is in the other two, which indicated greater selectivity of extraction with TEHPO.

Determination of Trivalent Uranium with Methylene Blue

A direct titrimetric method for the determination of trivalent uranium in uranium trifluoride and mixtures of fused fluoride salts was developed. The method is based on the stoichiometric oxidation of trivalent uranium to the tetravalent oxidation state with an acidic solution of methylene blue. The sample containing trivalent uranium is dissolved at room temperature in an excess of standard methylene blue solution in a carbon dioxide atmosphere; the excess oxidant is variation of the method is 1.5 per cent for 5 mg quantities of trivalent uranium. The method was applied to various mixtures of fluoride salts containing both trivalent and tetravalent uranium.

Experimental Determination of an Adequate Fission Chamber Location in the ORR Pool

An experiment was performed at the ORR in order to find a good fission chamber location. Two locations on the pool side of the reactor tank were explored with a one inch diameter fission chamber. The thermal neutron flux attention was found to vary nearly exponentially with distance, and no shadowing effect could be seen during a reactor startup. The fission products high gamma flux could be discriminated without difficulties. Both positions seem to be adequate to locate a reactor control fission channel.

Volstility Pilot Plant Mark III Fluorinator will be a double-chamber type vessel, each chamber 2-1/2ft. by 16in. o.d. separated by a 5 in. pipe 15 in. long. ASME flanged and dished heads will be used for the chamber tops and conical sections with a 60º apex angle for the chamber bottoms. A new furnace designed to maintain the complete lower chamber (molten salt + freeboard) above melt temperature will eliminate past experiences of salt solidification on the wall, heads, and in or on the internal process lines. External pipe runs will be sutoresistance heated to allow melting and drain back of salt plugs. The upper chamber serves as a gas de-entrainment and solids precipitation device to retain most of the entrained salt and condensable fluorides in the 100-400°C temperature range.

Operation of the ORNL Graphite Reactor and the Low-Intensity Test Reactor — 1955 LITR Flux Traverses

The ORNL Graphite Reactor operated very well during 1955. The downtime was low, only 8.6%. The fuel in the bonded slugs did not perform as well in 1955 as in 1954. Much of the trouble was undoubtedly due to growth of slugs which were not beta-transformed. It is known that some slugs had grown over 1/2 in. The automatic central system installed in 1954 continued to operate satisfactorily. The cooling system gave minor trouble when one of the 900-hp fan meters had to be replaced because of shorts in the rotor. The high radiation in the canal was the largest source of trouble. Approximately 55 tons of slugs discharged from the reactor in 1952 was sent to the Metal Recovery Plant. Enough slugs had raptured, due to their long exposure in the canal and reactor, to badly contaminate of water. Most of the contamination was removed by the end of the year, but the radioactivity which had soaked into the canal wells was enough to give high radiation fields. A solution to this problem was being sought at the end of the year. A study is under way on the possibility of increasing the flux of the ORNL Graphite Reactor …

The available literature was analyzed, and the results of the different investigators were compared and averaged. Twenty different materials, including stainless steels, nickel alloys, Stellites and others, were investigated from the point of view of physical properties, susceptibility to radiation damage, and corrosion resistance. Corrosion rates were established for all the materials under various conditions, such as irradiation, flow weld, stress, and various water conditions. Type-304 stainless steel was selected as the basic structural material. Operating conditions, to maintain minimum corrosion, were established also.
