Preliminary Leaching Tests for the Extraction of Uranium From Various Monticello Stockpile Ores

In a section of the area occupied by the Atomic Energy Commission in Grand Junction, Colorado, a pilot plant is being erected to test a resin-in-pulp process. The process is based on the adsorption of uranium by resin from acid pulps. The first ores to be treated at this plant will be Monticello Stockpile Material. Samples of the various stockpiles sere subjected to a series of leaching, filtering and settling tests, the results of which are presented in this report.

In-Pile Slurry Loop Program (open access)

In-Pile Slurry Loop Program

The in-plie slurry loop work is now being considered as a joint program between the PAR project and ORNL. It is proposed that PAR design, fabricate and test the in-pile loops and that ORNL operate the loops in-pile, dismantle the loops after irradiation and made the appropriate measurements to determine the radiation effects. This report gives the objects of the slurry in-pile program and outlines the facilities and operations required to execute ORNL's part of this program.

Chemistry of the "Silver Reactor" (open access)

Chemistry of the "Silver Reactor"

The use of a reactor charged with silver nitrate coated packing for removal of radio-iodine from the waste gases of Hanford chemical processing plants has been successful in removing approximately 99.5 percent of this activity. Studies by the Radiological Sciences Department indicated the desirability of further reducing the amount of radio-iodine released to the atmosphere. Therefore, this study was undertaken with the objectives of better understanding the inherent limitations to iodine removal by reaction with silver nitrate, and improving the efficiency of removal of iodine.

Electrodeposition of Aluminum on Uranium (open access)

Electrodeposition of Aluminum on Uranium

Abstract: "Aluminum electroplating was studied in a search for new methods of cladding uranium fuel elements. Uranium electroclad with 12 mils of aluminum over a 0.5-mil (or nickel plus copper) electroplate resisted corrosion for more than 100 hr in boiling water. This quality of protection was effected by hot pressing the electroclad uranium with 5.1 tons per sq in. for 5 min at 950 F. The electroclad uranium with hot-pressed samples paralleled those of later experiments with hot-pressed wrought aluminum claddings on uranium. In both cases, the uranium was electroplated with thin (0.5 mil) layers of metals to prevent aluminum-uranium diffusion, to aid bonding, and to assist in corrosion protection. This aluminum electroplating study helped to define the importance of the intermediate coating between the aluminum and the uranium, the effect of good bonds between the various layers, and the effects of hot pressing in protecting uranium with an aluminum cladding."

The Comet and Gray Eagle Mines and Adjacent Area, Jefferson County, Montana (open access)

The Comet and Gray Eagle Mines and Adjacent Area, Jefferson County, Montana

Abstract: Anomalous radioactivity and uranium minerals have been found on the dumps of the Comet, Gray Eagle, and Silver Hill mines situated along the Comet-Gray Eagle shear zone. The shear zone is from 50 to 200 feet in width and has been traced 5 1/2 miles. The Gray Eagle mine is currently being reopened but no underground work, with the exception of a few shallow shafts and adits, has been done between the Gray Eagle and Comet mines. Because of the high U3 08 content of the samples from the Comet and Gray Eagle dumps, it is recommended that a minimum of four diamond drill holes totaling 3, 000 feet be drilled by AEC between the two mines to intersect the shear zone 300 to 500 feet below the surface. This drilling should be made contingent upon the results of the Gray Eagle exploration.

Determination of Ruthenium in Plutonium (open access)

Determination of Ruthenium in Plutonium

An analytical procedure for 0.04 to 1.6 percent ruthenium in plutonium metal was developed. Determination of ruthenium in metallic plutonium was investigated as part of a program for securing analytical procedures for various metals in plutonium. However, results of the investigation are given in this report with emphasis on the determination of ruthenium in plutonium chloride solutions. Specifically, this report is primarily concerned with the separation and determination of 40 to 400 micrograms of ruthenium in a hydrochloric acid solution of 25 to 100 milligrams of plutonium.

Two Group Calculations for Flux Distribution and Critical Mass in Clean Cold ORR Cores (open access)

Two Group Calculations for Flux Distribution and Critical Mass in Clean Cold ORR Cores

A series of two-group calculations has been made on the Oracle for the purpose of obtaining critical-mass and flux distribution data for various ORR core configurations. The 3G3R code of Bate, Einstein, and Kinney was used, together with the RSP code developed by Nelson. This made it possible to obtain results for the three-dimensional case. The results, which are presented graphically, are intended to serve as a guide for the design of experiments until such time as actual measurements are available. The calculations were performed for the "clean cold" case, and it should be realized that the presence in the core of experiments and of fission products built up during operation will materially alter the flux patterns found. It is believed that the critical-mass data are accurate to within 10%. Within the fuel region it is believed that the thermal-flux patterns are the also accurate to this degree. Comparison of the results with MTR critical experiments, however, indicates that the thermal flux in the reflector in the vicinity of the fuel-reflector interface may have been underestimated by a factor of as much as 1.3. It should also be recalled that in a two-group calculation the "fast flux" is often a …

Initial Measurements on the Angular Distribution of Deuterium Plasma Produced by a Pulsed Spark Source

Abstract: "The deuterium plasma which is ejected by a 6000-ampere pulsed current through a rail-type spark source has a yield in the forward direction which is a factor of 5 to 10 greater than that in the perpendicular direction. This effect is believed to be due to the magnetic propulsion of the plasma."
