Summary. A test rig has been designed to obtain basic two phase forced convection liquid metal heat transfer and pressure drop data for use in the design of liquid metal boilers. This engineering report includes background of the boiling problem, partial summary of work done by other investigators, the object, scope, engineering, and operations of this test rig, and a summary of reproducibility tests conducted in a water back-up rig.

Experimental Investigations of the Removal of Sodium Oxide From Liquid Sodium

Isotopic Examination of Tantalum
Introduction: "The ionization region in the Nier mass spectrometer is customarily constructed of copper. Various other metals were tried for this purpose; among them tantalum and molybdenum, with both metals it was found that a spectrum of the fluoride of the metal appeared when uranium hexafluoride was admitted. It was thus possible to produce tantalum fluoride with comparative ease and to make a critical examination of the mass spectrum to set an upper limit of abundance of tantalum isotopes. For positive identification, a line must appear in all ion positions in the same abundance, relative to the main line. It must be shown that any lines which appear are not contributed by other elements or compounds."

The Consumer Price Index: Recent Improvements and Prospective Changes
As part of a long running effort to make the Consumer Price Index (CPI) a better measure of price change, the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the Department of Labor has made a number of changes in recent years which have affected actual measures of inflation and hence both federal outlays and receipts. This report summarizes those changes, presents estimates of their effect on measured inflation, and expands what other changes are expected for the CPI.

Medical Malpractice Liability Reform: H.R. 5, 109th Congress
This report discusses H.R. 5, which would preempt state law regarding some aspects of medical malpractice liability and liability for defective medical products, including drugs. The legislation would among other things, place caps on noneconomic and punitive damages (in states that have not enacted and do not enact caps), eliminate joint and several liability, modify the collateral source rule, limit lawyers' contingent fees, enact a federal statute of limitations, and provide for periodic payment of future damages.
