Groundwater in Alluvium of the Lower Mississippi Valley (Upper and Central Areas): Volume 1 (open access)

Groundwater in Alluvium of the Lower Mississippi Valley (Upper and Central Areas): Volume 1

Summary: "This report provides data on the alluvial aquifer of the Lower Mississippi Valley in the area between Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Port Gibson, Mississippi. Maps are presented of the Tertiary surface on which the alluvial aquifer rests as well as the geology of this surface and the areas where hydrologic recharge to the alluvial aquifer may occur. A set of piezometric-surface maps, together with hydrographs of observation wells, river stages, precipitation rates, and data on the hydrologic properties of the alluvium, makes it possible to calculate changes which take place in the aquifer. Further data are presented on the chemical quality of groundwater. The relevance of these data to engineering problems is discussed" (p. ix).

APPLICATION OF CYCLIC CO2 METHODS IN AN OVER-MATURE MISICBLE CO2 PILOT PROJECT-WEST MALLALIEU FIELD, LINCOLN COUNTY, MS (open access)

APPLICATION OF CYCLIC CO2 METHODS IN AN OVER-MATURE MISICBLE CO2 PILOT PROJECT-WEST MALLALIEU FIELD, LINCOLN COUNTY, MS

This progress report summarizes the results of a miscible cyclic CO{sub 2} project conducted at West Mallalieu Field Unit (WMU) Lincoln County, MS by J.P. Oil Company, Inc. Lafayette, LA. Information is presented regarding the verification of the mechanical integrity of the present candidate well, WMU 17-2B, to the exclusion of nearby more desirable wells from a reservoir standpoint. Engineering summaries of both the injection and flow back phases of the cyclic process are presented. The results indicate that the target volume of 63 MMCF of CO{sub 2} was injected into the candidate well during the month of August 2000 and a combined 73 MMCF of CO{sub 2} and formation gas were recovered during September, October, and November 2000. The fact that all of the injected CO{sub 2} was recovered is encouraging; however, only negligible volumes of liquid were produced with the gas. A number of different factors are explored in this report to explain the lack of economic success. These are divided into several groupings and include: Reservoir Factors, Process Factors, Mechanical Factors, and Special Circumstances Factors. It is impossible to understand precisely the one or combination of interrelated factors responsible for the failure of the experiment but I …

Application of Thermal Imagery and Aerial Photography to Hydrologic Studies of Karst Terrane in Missouri (open access)

Application of Thermal Imagery and Aerial Photography to Hydrologic Studies of Karst Terrane in Missouri

From abstract: Planning waste-disposal facilities and impoundments is complicated by karst carbonate terrane in the Ozarks. Thermal imagery (8-13 micrometer wavelength) and color infrared photography aid in identifying losing streams, sinkholes and hydrologic conditions encouraging collapse. Imagery and photography were acquired in Greene and Reynold Counties, Mo., in March 1972 and June 1973. Differences in thermal levels correlating with losing and gaining reaches of Logan Creek valley, Reynolds County, were not visually apparent in predawn March imagery but statistical analysis of predawn magnetic-tape data indicated greater variance in emitted energy from the losing reach than from the gaining reach.
