The Wheat Jointworm and Its Control
Revised edition. "The wheat jointworm is a very small grub which lives in stems of wheat, feeding on the juices of the plant and causing a slight swelling or distortion of the stem above the joint. The egg from which it hatches is laid in the stem by an insect resembling a small black ant with wings. This insect attacks wheat only. The injury which it causes to wheat is very distinct from that caused by the Hessian fly, yet the effects caused by these two insects are often confused by farmers." -- p. 1-2. This bulletin gives a brief outline of the life cycle and the nature of the injury to the plant by the jointworm so that any farmer may readily recognize its work and be able to apply the measures of control herein recommended.

Soil Defense in the Pacific Southwest
"The Pacific Southwest, as considered in this bulletin, embraces the two States -- California and Nevada. Evidences of soil and water losses are briefly touched upon, as are the factors contributing to these losses. The bulk of the bulletin deals with measures of defense that are now being employed on farms and range land within project areas of the Soil Conservation Service and in areas where members of Civilian Conservation Corps camps have been assigned to erosion-control activities." -- p. i. Some of the measures discussed include the use of cover crops, contour farming, crop rotation, subsoiling, strip cropping, and terracing.

Citrus-Fruit Improvement: How to Secure and Use Tree-Performance Records
"Many California citrus growers have reported in recent years that they were securing lower yields of fruit per acre than in the earlier history of their industry. Complaint also has been made that an increasing proportion of the fruit of the leading commercial varieties of oranges and lemons was abnormal or 'off type' in size, form, color, smoothness of skin, or other important characteristics.... The results obtained in bud-selection experiments carried on during the past five years indicate that by top-working with buds from those having consistently good records for productiveness and quality the inferior or 'drone' trees of such varieties as Washington Navel and Valencia oranges can be made productive and profitable. This bulletin describes the methods that have been found effective and practicable in locating the desirable and undesirable trees in groves and for transforming the latter when found." -- p. 2

Growing and Curing Hops
"In keeping with the great progress made in agriculture within recent years the methods employed in hop production have not remained unchanged. Nevertheless certain practical principles of great importance to successful hop growing merit a much wider consideration and use than they now enjoy. The Sugar-Beet Nematode in the Western States
"The sugar-beet nematode is one of the most serious of the beet pests. It appears to have been imported with some shipments of beet seed many years ago. It has been found widely scattered in four of the western sugar-beet States and probably exists in other States where beets have been grown for several years. The sugar-beet nematode is the cause of a great deal of loss to the beet grower through reduction of his tonnage, and of a corresponding amount of loss to the sugar producer through reduction of the output of sugar. This bulletin treats of the nature and distribution of the sugar-beet nematode, indicates the most probable means by which this pest is spread, and suggests preventive measures and practical means of control." -- p. 2
