Leaching and Precipitation Tests on Grants Ores
Leaching tests were run on two samples from the Grants area in New Mexico. Uranium extractions of 94 per cent were obtained by leaching Sample 6-1 with solutions containing 240 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 60 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton and by leaching Sample 6-2 with 270 lbs. of Na2CO3 and 180 lbs. of NaHCO3 per ton. Cyclic tests were completed using caustic precipitation of the leach liquor.

Zirconium Pilot Plant Research and Development Progress Report

Prayer and Religion in the Public Schools: What Is, and Is Not, Permitted
Few areas of constitutional law have proven to be as controversial and as subject to misinterpretation as that concerning the constitutionality of government-sponsored religious activities in public schools. In the last three decades the Supreme Court in five decisions and the State arid lower Federal courts in dozens of related decisions have attempted to articulate the 1 / meaning of the religion clauses of the First ~mendment- for a variety of such activities, including State-sponsored prayer, Bible reading, and religious teaching. Notwithstanding continuing political controversy over many of these decisions, they provide a fairly consistent interpretation and application of the First Amendment.

Evaluation of Experiment Off-gas System for the EGCR-LITR Capsule Experiment
A proposed modification to the experiment off-gas system for the EGCR-LITR Capsule Experiment is evaluated by comparing the atmospheric radiation doses to laboratory personnel that could result in the event of an experiment failure while utilizing the present off-gas system to those doses that would result if various modifications to the existing system were effected. The modifications considered include the addition of an iodine vapor adsorber and a krypton-xenon adsorber. The addition of an iodine vapor adsorber to the off-gas system, which presently includes an absolute filter, reduces the atmospheric dose to the thyroid from 510 mr to 1.4mr. The total body dose is also reduced from 2.2 to 1.3 mr. The total body dose can be further reduced to 0.7 mr if a large krypton-xenon adsorber is included. Basd upon these calculated atmospheric radiation doses it is concluded that the addition of an activated charcoal iodine vapor adsorber will reduce the atmospheric hazard to an acceptable level.

Sweeping of Fission Gases from Solutions of U and Plutonium
Technical report describing two experiments performed to compare the amounts of fission gases swept out of UNH solution with those amounts swept out of PU solution under idential condiditons. The charge wire technique was used. The essential date and the results are given in tables in the report.

Seismic Decoupling for Explosions in Spherical Cavities
Abstract. A series of paired explosions in a salt mine near Winnfield, Louisiana, has been conducted to test a theory by Dr. A. L. Latter concerning seismic decoupling by underground cavities. The theory predicted a decoupling of about 100. Free-field and surface measurements from an explosion in either a 6-ft- or a 15-ft-radius spherical cavity were compared with similar measurements from a completely tamped explosion. Shot sixes were from a 10 lb up to a few tons. Surface measurements were made out to 100 km and covered the frequency range from 0.05 to 100 cpa. The experiment confirmed that decoupling does occur. The actual decoupling factor as a function of frequency is presented and compared with the Latter theory.

The 2010 Oil Spill: Natural Resource Damage Assessment Under the Oil Pollution Act
The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill leaked an estimated 4.1 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, damaging the waters, shores, and marshes, and the fish and wildlife that live there. When resources in the public trust are harmed by contamination, federal, state, foreign, and tribal governments may seek compensation for damage to natural resources under certain laws. This is done in two steps: first, by assessing the harm; then, by determining how and what restoration will take place. Compensation for natural resource damage is intended to restore the natural resources to their condition before the damage and to compensate the public for the lost use of those resources. This report discusses legislation that provides a framework for assessing and mitigating the damage caused by such spills.

Columbia River Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Procedures Report For The Bliss, Burlington Northern, James, and Straub Tracts Of The Stiegerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge
Steigenvald Lake National Wildlife Refuge (NWR, refuge) was established as a result of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers (COE) transferring ownership of the Stevenson tract located in the historic Steigerwald Lake site to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS, Service) for the mitigation of the fish and wildlife losses associated with the construction of a second powerhouse at the Bonneville Dam on the Columbia River and relocation of the town of North Bonneville (Public Law 98-396). The construction project was completed in 1983 and resulted in the loss of approximately 577 acres of habitat on the Washington shore of the Columbia River (USFWS, 1982). The COE determined that acquisition and development of the Steigenvald Lake area, along with other on-site project management actions, would meet their legal obligation to mitigate for these impacts (USCOE, 1985). Mitigation requirements included restoration and enhancement of this property to increase overall habitat diversity and productivity. From 1994 to 1999, 317 acres of additional lands, consisting of four tracts of contiguous land, were added to the original refuge with Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) funds provided through the Washington Wildlife Mitigation Agreement. Carnotite Resources of San Miguel Bench, Montrose County, Colorado
Abstract: San Miguel bench includes about 4 square miles in the southern part of T. 48 N., R. 17 W., New Mexico principal meridian, Montrose County, Colorado. Production of carnotite ore from the area has been about 15, 000 short tons having an estimated average graderof 0. 31 percent U3O8,and 1. 6 percent V2 05 Nearly all of the carnotite deposits occur in a single-continuous sandstone bed near the top of the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. These deposits consist chiefly of sandstone impregnated with uranium- and vanadium-bearing minerals. They are irregular tabular-shaped masses ranging in size from a few short tons to 30, 000 short tons or more of minable carnotite ore. During the period November 27, 1951, to April 17, 1953, the U. S. Geological Survey drilled 309 holes totaling 92, 194 feet on the San Miguel bench. Reserves total about 43, 000 short tons of material 1 foot or more thick and contain 0,.10 percent or more U30 or 1. 0 percent or more V205. Of these reserves 3, 300 short tons occur in private land. Interim Report on Exploration in the Yellow Cat Area, Grand County, Utah
From introduction: This report summarizes the results of diamond-drill and wagon-drill exploration by the U. S. Geological Survey in the Yellow Cat area from October 9, 1951, to May 22, 1952. The Yellow Cat area is about 10 miles southeast of Thompsons, Grand County, Utah. It is accessable by two graded roads which leave U. S. Highway 50 at points 5 miles east of Thompsons and 7 miles west of Cisco, Utah. A sampling plant and purchasing depot, belonging to the United States Vanadium Co., is at Thompsons. The explored ground includes about 8 square miles principally in T. 22 S., R. 22 E., and the northern part of T. 23 S., R. 22 E., Salt Lake meridian (fig. 1). Altitudes in the area range from about 4, 600 feet to 5, 100 feet (datum is assumed but is approximately correct), and the relief is moderate.
