National Uranium Resource Evaluation: Lawton Quadrangle, Oklahoma and Texas

From purpose and scope: The Lawton Quadrangle, Oklahoma and Texas (Fig. 1), was evaluated to a depth of 1500 m (5,000 ft) to identify geologic environments and delineate areas that exhibit characteristics favorable for uranium deposits. Determination of uranium favorability was based on the similarity of geologic characteristics to the National Uranium Resource Evaluation (NURE) recognition criteria described in Mickle and Mathews (eds., 1978).

Introduction: The areas of study include parts of the Wichita uplift, Arbuckle uplift, Hunton-Pauls Valley uplift, Central Oklahoma platform, Muenster-Waurika arch, and Anadarko basin (Fig. 1.1-1). Rocks examined include the Precambrian granite of the Arbuckle uplift, Cambrian igneous rocks of the Wichita uplift, and Pennsylvanian-Permian sedimentary rocks derived in large part from those two uplifts and, to a lesser extent, from the Ouachita system.

Report on airborne radioactivity surveys and the uranium deposits in the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma

The U. S. Atomic Energy Commission conducted an airborne radioactivity survey of the Red River region of Texas and Oklahoma beginning in December 1955 and ending in May 1956. All or parts of Archer, Clay, and Montague Counties in northern Texas and Carter, Cotton, Jefferson, and Stephens Counties in southern Oklahoma were surveyed. Particular attention was paid to those areas where exposures are found of red beds of the Permian Wichita Group. Field examinations were conducted of anomalies discovered by airborne reconnaissance as well as those reported by private individuals. Forty localities were examined, the majority in sandstones, siltstones, or conglomerates. Uranium and copper minerals were identified at several localities. Ferruginous staining, bleaching of the sandstone color, calcium carbonate cement, and carbonized plant remains are common to the deposits

Geology and Fuel Resources of the Southern Part of the Oklahoma Coal Field: Part 3. Quinton-Scipio District

From abstract: The Quinton-Scipio district includes about 450 square miles, mostly in Pittsburg County but partly in Haskell and Latimer Counties, Okla. The stratified rocks exposed at the surface in the district are the McAlester, Savanna, Boggy, Thurman, Stuart, and Senora formations, of Pennsylvanian age, and consist of alternating beds of shale and sandstone with some coal beds and a few beds of limestone less than 1 foot thick. The total thickness of these formations exposed in the district is between 3,000 and 3,300 feet. There are probably unconformities at the base of the Savanna sandstone and at the base of the Thurman sandstone. Overlying the Pennsylvanian formations in parts of the district are unconsolidated sand, gravel, and clay, which in part belong to the Gerty sand, a deposit in an abandoned Quaternary (?) river channel. Other unconsolidated deposits include sand on stream terraces and Recent alluvium.

Census and Statistical Characterization of Soil and Water Quality at Abandoned and Other Centralized and Commercial Drilling-Fluid Disposal Sites in Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas

Commercial and centralized drilling-fluid disposal (CCDD) sites receive a portion of spent drilling fluids for disposal from oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) operations. Many older and some abandoned sites may have operated under less stringent regulations than are currently enforced. This study provides a census, compilation, and summary of information on active, inactive, and abandoned CCDD sites in Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, intended as a basis for supporting State-funded assessment and remediation of abandoned sites. Closure of abandoned CCDD sites is within the jurisdiction of State regulatory agencies. Sources of data used in this study on abandoned CCDD sites mainly are permit files at State regulatory agencies. Active and inactive sites were included because data on abandoned sites are sparse. Onsite reserve pits at individual wells for disposal of spent drilling fluid are not part of this study. Of 287 CCDD sites in the four States for which we compiled data, 34 had been abandoned whereas 54 were active and 199 were inactive as of January 2002. Most were disposal-pit facilities; five percent were land treatment facilities. A typical disposal-pit facility has fewer than 3 disposal pits or cells, which have a median size of approximately …
