The soil was left bare and completely free of protective cover for several years allowing severe erosion to occur. The area will be fenced, tilled, mulched and seeded to tall wheatgrass and other salt tolerant grasses to attempt re-vegetation. OK-4081-9.

Photograph of Carland Smith, owner of several abandoned coal pits, reserves this ara fro his family and very close friends. He has two docks, electricity and running water. He plans to build a cabin in thi area. This pit is fertized according to recommendations. He has been successful inobtaining a good "bloom" in this pit.

Photograph of a 40 acre field of bermuda grass on an area which was previously coal strip pits. The area was used by the city of Okmulgee for a saniatry landfill. This area was used for disposal between 1955 and 1960. OK-2903-12.

Photograph of Carland Smith who has constructed this dam across the natural drainage from this pit area. The primary purpose of the dam was an access road across the top and to provide shallow water immediately in front of the dam to launch fishing boats. OK-2003-7 [?].

Photograph of an UNIDENTIFIED farmer using District equipment to harvest certified Midland Bermudagrass roots on Cooperator Vetus Clarkson's farm. The back of the photograph proclaims, "Bermuda Grass Roots. District equipment harvesting certified Midland Bermuda grass roots on Cooperator Vetus Clarkson's farm. Roots are being used by District to sprig on other cooperators farms in the District. Returns to cooperator from half of harvest rights will amount to $35.00 per acre and the District will fertilize to enable another harvest in 1960. This field was sprigged in 1955."

Photograph of flood water damage. Bridge abutment and approach on Little Cane. Creek washed only-in flood on July 12, 1958. Damage to roads and bridges was extensive from this flood. There were 2 overflows to date in 1958 and 3 in 1957. Damage to the bridge is being inspected by John Crooch, Soil Conservation Service. OK-631-6.
