A tribute to T. N. Carswell by Geo. S. Anderson regarding the resignation of Carswell from the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Clifton Forge, Virginia from Chas. W. Barnes, dated April 12, 1938. Barnes advises Carswell that it is unwise to undertake a return trip after the flu until he has regained all his strength. He advises that the cold spell is causing slowed business, that the snow is not damaging the crops but did kill the fruit and gardens and then dangles a few remarks regarding a business deal he made assuring that he will hold a part of it for Carswell if he is interested.

The Articles of Incorporation for the West Texas Baptist Sanitarium, in Abilene, Texas. The articles detail that "C. M. Caldwell, J. D. Sandefer and George S. Anderson form a private corporation by the name of The West Texas Baptist Sanitarium in Abilene, in the County of Taylor and State of Texas the 26th day of February, A. D., 1923. The third page includes: "George S. Anderson as Chairman, and T. N. Carswell, as Secretary certify at a meeting of the Board of Trustees held May 19, 1936 the changed name of the corporation from WEST TEXAS BAPTIST SANITARIUM to HENDRICK MEMORIAL HOSPITAL." The articles are signed on May 9, 1936.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Abilene, Texas from John Camp, The Ohio Oil Co., Houston, Texas, dated September 8, 1938. Camp notes his surprise at Carswell's retirement as Secretary of the Abilene Chamber of Commerce and expresses his regret for the City's loss stating that in his opinion Carswell "as Secretary, contributed more toward the welfare of the town than any other citizen", and wishes him success in his new business.

Carswell that he is having a good time and advises that he was sent to Chicago by International Harvester Co. of Jacksonville, Fla., his company of two years.

A form letter from Tommy Carswell, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, Abilene, Texas, dated March 30, 1938. Reminder from Carswell of their failure to remember "Mrs. Rad" [Bessie May Handy Radford] on the occasion of their Annual Party and a request for donations for Easter lillies to be sent to her in the name of the Drum Corps.

A letter written to "Mother" and "Peg" [Byrdie Carswell and Peggy Carswell], from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated February 20, 1933. Carswell advises of his travel plans, his preparation for the Lions Program and the Radford testimonial dinner ["50 Years of building Abilene"] noting the late work hours, hard work and no money. His postscript refers to late nights and tells about going to Breckenridge to the Lions Conference taking Mrs. Sandefer with him, his returning at 5 p.m., reading awhile, of going to Church then over to Barnes playing checkers and talking until late.

A letter written to "Mother" and "Peg" [Byrdie Carswell and Peggy Carswell], from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated February 27, 1932. Carswell acknowledges receipt of their letters expressing his regret that Peg was sick. He describes his enjoyment in speaking to the High School class of the Future Farmers of America and his trip with Mr. Tittle to Robert Lee where Mr. Bradley asked after Peg.

A letter written to "Mother" and "Peg" [Byrdie Carswell and Peggy Carswell], from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated February 29, 1932. Carswell advises of his travel plans to New Orleans via Dallas for a meeting of the American Cotton Co-Operative Association and the possibility of visiting Jackson, Mississippi and Baton Rouge on some highway projects.

A letter written to "Mother" and "Peg" [Byrdie Carswell and Peggy Carswell], from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated May 6, 1932. Carswell tells about a fishing trip he took with H. B. Stevens, R. F. Babb, J. W. Weems, Hardy Grissom, George Minter, Henry Bass, Dilworth Parramore and Walter Baker. He notes that he was a bit sore and sick afterward yet wishes that he could have ten days of "such outing" but that it is not possible.

A letter written to "Mother" and "Peg" [Byrdie Carswell and Peggy Carswell], from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated May 10, 1932. Carswell expresses his distress that Peg is not doing well noting they evidently will have to get further south the next winter. He explains how he welcomed the Knights of Pythias Convention in behalf of the city using Katherine Barnes to present roses and that he will write later regarding getting the household goods home.

A letter written to "Mother" [Byrdie Carswell] from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated February 16, 1932. Carswell advises of a Washington's birthday special rate available from San Antonio to Tuscola and return for $7.95, hoping she and Peggy Anne would arrange to leave Friday night for the long weekend. In a handwritten postscript he suggests a possibility of the same rate via Dallas or Ft. Worth.

A letter written to "Mother" [Byrdie Carswell] from "Daddy" [T. N. Carswell], dated January 25, 1932. Carswell advises that he has arrived home on the Sunshine Special after a trip to Dallas, expresses his concern for his daughter, Peggy, having been ill, advises that he has changed his travel plans to Austin because of the rain and notes that he had a pleasant time in Hamlin.

A letter addressed to Messrs. C. W. Barnes, O. D. Dillingham, W. J. Fulwiler, J. C. Hunter, E. R. McDaniel, O. E. Radford, and E. L. Thornton, from T. N. Carswell, Merchants Paper Company, dated February 11, 1939. Carswell explains that he found it necessary to dispense with the services of Mr. Diffenbaugh, effective January 31, 1939, and paid him a month's salary.

A letter addressed to Messrs. C. W. Barnes, O. D. Dillingham, W. J. Fulwiler, J. C. Hunter, E. R. McDaniel, O. E. Radford, and E. L. Thornton, from T. N. Carswell, Merchants Paper Company, dated January 7, 1939. Carswell confirms that the papers legally setting up the Merchants Paper Company as a Limited Partnership have been filed and recorded and advises of a $4,000.00 partnership interest to Mr. P. H. Diffenbaugh .

A letter written to Mr. Frank Grimes, Editor, Abilene Daily Reporter, Abilene, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, dated September 10, 1938. Carswell expresses his deep appreciation to Grimes for the sentiment expressed in the editorial referring to his accomplishments during his connection with the Abilene Chamber of Commerce.

Report by Carswell regarding money donated by the "Drum Corps" that was left over after purchasing flowers for Mrs. Radford suggesting they add the difference to the treasury. A letter written to R. G. Dickerson, Valdosta, Georgia from T. N. Carswell, dated December 20, 1938. Carswell offers his sympathy on Cary's death.

A letter written to Mr. J. C. Hunter, President, Abilene Chamber of Commerce, from T. N. Carswell, dated September 10, 1938. Letter of resignation by Carswell from the Abilene Chamber of Commerce confirming that he is turning over to Mr. Gruver the records of the office.

A letter written to Mr. John Camp, The Ohio Oil Company, Houston, Texas from T. N. Carswell, dated September 10, 1938. Carswell acknowledges his receipt of the letter from Camp and expresses his appreciation for the "spirit" of the letter. He writes, "I am checking out today and will begin Monday morning with my own business, wholesale paper."

A letter written to Mr. John H. Hewlett, Colleen Moore's Doll House, Atlanta, Georgia, from T. N. Carswell, Sec.-Mgr. [Abilene Chamber of Commerce], dated April 29, 1938. Carswell expresses to Hewlett that the Chamber is exceedingly anxious to have the Doll House in Abilene.

A letter written to Mr. John H. Hewlett, Atlanta, Georgia, from T. N. Carswell, Sec.-Mgr. [Abilene Chamber of Commerce], dated January 15, 1938. Carswell affirms to Hewlett that it is good news to know that he is coming to Abilene with the Doll House and advises of an enclosed map of the three leading department stores and a furniture store.

A letter written to Mr. John H. Hewlett, Atlanta, Georgia, from T. N. Carswell, Sec.-Mgr. [Abilene Chamber of Commerce], dated July 5, 1938. Carswell advises Hewlett that he will not be with the Chamber of Commerce after that year.

A letter written to Mildred Moody, Austin, Texas from T. N. Carswell, dated June 24, 1938. Carswell advises that he is leaving the Chamber of Commerce and is sending files of her work while she was at the Chamber and requests her thoughts on how to dispose of funds collected while he was President of the Alumni Association for a Memorial Building. He advises that he suggested to Truett [E. T. Compere] that they might ask Prexy [J. D. Sandefer].
