Blakley acknowledges that he is not an experienced politician and having been appointed to the Senate on January 15, 1957 by Governor Shivers but that he feels the need to serve to preserve our system of government which is based on the separation of powers and the sovereignty of the States. He advises of the devotion that is required from all who believe in contitutional government and requests suggestions regarding his candidacy for the United States Senate.

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Carswell Travel Agency, Abilene, Texas, from Wm. A. Blakley, Dallas, Texas, dated April 21, 1958. Blakley expresses his appreciation for Carswell's letter of confidence and support and for his contribution to the campaign. "You may be sure that I was not unmindful of the encouragment given me in Abilene when I reached my decision to make this campaign."

A letter written to Mr. T. N. Carswell, Carswell Travel Agency, Abilene, Texas, from Omar Burleson, House of Representatives, Washington, D. C., dated January 16, 1958. Burleson advises of his nomination of Thomas Dale Butler, Jr. to take the admission exam for the United States Air Force Academy noting that Carswell's recommendation of Butler carried much weight. The reverse side includes handwritten calculations and inked stamp date Jan. 31 1958.

A letter written to Dr. E. S. James, Editor of The Baptist Standard, from T. N. Carswell, dated January 10, 1958. Carswell discusses the attached editorial written by James, "Down with The Baptists" and addresses an inference that he finds unclear: "that our Baptist schools are in error when admission is granted to non-Baptists, and in admitting Baptists whose church record is amiss". Carswell advises of his disagreement with such a policy, of the effects of the possible application in the future. The article in question, which appeared in the January 1958 issue of The Baptist Standard, is attached, and includes the report regarding student protests at Wake Forest demonstrating against the convention for its ban on dancing on campus; condemnation of the action by Wake Forest trustees which allowed dancing on campus; praise regarding action taken by President J. C. Canipe; condemnation of students on any Baptist campus participating in unchristian demonstrations then presenting the theory these students are not Baptists which stems from schools accepting applicants from other denominations.

A letter addressed to The Honorable Mayor and Members of the City Commission, City of Abilene, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, dated November 20, 1958. Carswell advises of an ordinance having passed while he was away from the City, the closing of Cedar Street between Ambler Avenue and Vogle and the resulting depreciation of his property value.

A letter addressed to the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, from T. N. Carswell, Chairman, Taylor County Voluntary Parole Board, dated September 26, 1958. Carswell gives to the Board his recommendation for Subject to file an application for a full pardon and restoration.

A letter addressed to Public Relations, Delta Air Lines, Atlanta, Georgia, from T. N. Carswell, dated November 20, 1958. Carswell expresses his appreciation for help in catching a flight advising that Miss McKool was the friendly and charming messenger doing this especial service. He requests they use the check to purchase candy or a rose for McKool noting that long ago, someone said "sell a loaf and buy a rose, for the soul too must be fed".

A letter addressed to Ideals Publishing Company from T. N. Carswell, dated November 19, 1958. Carswell places an order for Ideals gift subscriptions advising that he attached a check to cover the cost.

A letter addressed to Mr. L. V. Porterfield, Oklahoma State Penitentiary, McAlister, Oklahoma, from T. N. Carswell, Chairman, Taylor County Parole Board, dated March 28, 1958. Carswell discusses the contents of a file received from the Board of Pardons and Paroles in Austin regarding the personal life of Subject No. 60604. He advises of a visit with the common law wife of Subject, that she had a file "fully as confusing" and that he threw both files into the waste basket.

A letter written to Mrs. Whitehead from T. N. Carswell, dated March 2, 1958. Carswell acknowledges the receipt of her letter regarding her question on the amount of the tax shown on the return advising the question proved to be well founded. He apologizes for his mistake and encourages her appraisal of his work as needed, expresses his appreciation for the spirit of her letter and advises that it "but deepens an opinion I've long had of you". In a postscript to Whitehead, Carswell advises that he is working on her 1957 return and that he will forward a rough draft.

A letter written to Senator Wm. A. Blakley, Dallas 2, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, dated April 17, 1958. Carswell congratulates Blakley on his decision to enter public service and gives to him his encouragement and a check for a campaign contribution.

A letter written to Senator William A. Blakley, Dallas, Texas, from T. N. Carswell, dated May 23, 1958. Carswell replies to Blakley's letter of May 14 with suggestions regarding his campaign strategy. "In my analysis of your candidacy you are not running for an office, you are challenging the people of Texas to a rededication and adherance to that principle of government that has contributed most to our greatness."

A letter written to the Chairman of the Oregon Board of Parole and Probation, Salem, Oregon, from T. N. Carswell, Chairman, Taylor County, Texas, Vountary Parole Board, dated December 5, 1958. Report and recommendation for executive clemency for Subject OSP 22,624. Carswell refers to the attached letter of Subject's own appeal for executive clemency stating his approval of the request both in his "official capacity and personally".

Handwritten inside the program is correspondence to Tommy [T. N. Carswell] from Sarah Anna. Crane reminisces regarding her father liking "this sort of show". Crane expresses her appreciation to Carswell for the update agreeing with Carswell regarding having fond memories of Hardin-Simmons and requests that if he sees Grace or Grady Andrews to please remember her to them.
