He discusses growing up with Carl Hampton, segregation in Houston, the community activities of the People's Party II, and how he would become the leader of the party after the Dowling Shootout. He also talks in depth about the goal and purpose of the Rainbow Coalition, which comprised of the People's Party II, the John Brown Revolutionary League and the Mexican American Youth Organization.

She graduated from the University of Houston in 2001 and then attended law school at Ohio Northern University Abalos has been chair of the Ector County Democratic Party. She has worked in various local political campaigns since she was a child. Abalos was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Premium Basin Planned Parenthood.

Richard C. Abalos grew up in Rankin, Texas. After graduating early from high school, Abalos moved to Odessa, Texas where he attended Odessa College and worked for a law form as an investigator and aide. Before obtaining an undergraduate degree, Abalos entered law school at St. Mary’s University in San Antono, Texas. After law school, he was drafted into the military. Upon returning to Odessa, he became the city’s first Mexican American attorney and handled several civil rights cases, including the nationally recognized Larry Lozano police beating that galvanized the region’s Chicano Movement.

Oral History Interview with Emilio Abeyta, June 24, 2016

Emelio E. Abeyta was born in the Santa Rosa, New Mexico area. His family moved to Littlefield for his father’s work. Abeyta began attending Catholic seminary in Santa Fe, New Mexico and then Ohio as a teenager. He served as a priest in various West Texas towns. While serving in Slaton, Texas, Abeyta ran for school board, becoming the first ethnic Mexican school board member and aiding in the integration of the town’s schools. He left the priesthood to work for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice. Afterwards, he attended law school in the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He returned to West Texas, Lubbock, to practice law. In Lubbock Abeyta also ran for a judgeship.

Christy Martinez-Garcia was born and raised in Lubbock. She attended Lubbock High School, Lamar University, and completed her degree at Texas Tech University. After college, Martinez-Garcia worked for the Lubbock city government and then for the National Council of La Raza in Washington D.C. Upon her return to Lubbock, Martinez-Garcia sought to counter the local media narrative that mostly only depicted Hispanics as criminals or only immigrants. Thus, she founded the magazine, Latino Lubbock. She also ran for a position in the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees. Martinez-Garcia has participated in numerous community organizations and was responsible for the naming of Cesar Chavez street in Lubbock as well as having a historical marker for a what once a migrant labor camp.

Ofelia Vasquez-Philo was born December 28, 1932 in Seguin, Texas, and was the oldest of nine children. She grew up on Freeman Ranch, in Wimberley, Tx., where her father was the ranch foreman. She married Joe Vasquez, Jr. in 1950 and they raised 7 children in San Marcos. After Joe's death in 1986, she married Harry Philo. Ofelia worked part-time in 1966 at the Office of Community Action. In 1970, she became executive director, a position she would hold until her retirement in 1993. During this period, she obtained her GED certificate, and her bachelor's degree from Antioch University, Austin campus in 1978. She was the first Latina to serve on the San Marcos Independent School Board from 1969-1971. She was a charter member of the San Marcos Heritage Foundation, and a member of the Hays County Historical Commission, the San Marcos League of Women Voters, the Hijas de Maria, the Archicofradia of St. John's Catholic Church, the St. Vincent de Paul Society, the Finance Council and the Bereavement Ministry of St John's Catholic Church. She also worked for the preservation of Hispanic cemeteries and served on numerous other city and county boards and commissions. She is coauthor of Suenos …

She pioneered “Operation Right Track” a public campaign to raise awareness about gang violence, drug, and alcohol abuse.
