This document describes field studies of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands in 1996. The studies provide information on the status and trends of monk seal populations, natural history traits (survival, reproduction, growth, behavior, and feeding habits), and the success of various activities designed to facilitate population growth.

From introduction: The program's objective is to acquire information through intensive monitoring of coastal projects in an effort to improve project purpose and attainment, design procedures, construction methods, and operation and maintenance techniques.

Partial abstract: Frequent dredging requirements and scouring at the foundation of Ocean City Inlet's south jetty resulted in a study to determine the source of the shoaling and scouring. The study concluded that sand was being transported northward along Assateague Island, through and over the south jetty, and deposited inside the inlet. The sand was then transported north by ebb currents where it encroached on the Federal navigation channel. A rehabilitation program was initiated to create a littoral barrier to eliminate the shoaling problem and to repair the scour hold. Three headland breakwaters were constructed to stabilize Northern Assateague Island. The site was selected as part of the Monitoring Completed Coastal Projects (MCCP) Program to determine how well the rehabilitation project accomplished its design purpose.

The following document is a report on an observational study around the Hawaiian monk seal on Lisianski Island in Northwestern Hawaiian Islands between 16-18 of May to 29th of August and the 10th of June to the 11th of August 1990. The data collected is based around reproduction and factors affecting survival as well ashaul-out patterns and population structure.

Aerial image shows the result of an airborne radioactive survey over an area of 65 square miles in the vicinity of Miller Hill, Carbon County, Wyoming with the approximate location of eleven radioactivity anomalies found. Text describes methods used and discusses the anomalies.

The following report is the results of a workshop held to determine the cause of fibropapilloma (lobulated tumors), thereby ultimately leading to solutions and effective strategies for containment. The urgent need to solve this problem arises from the unanimous belief among the workshop participants that this disease will continue to affect populations of turtles locally and worldwide, adding further to their survival difficulties. The workshop was held in December of 1990 and the research behind the workshop results from about 10 years of observing the species.
